Does anybody here target channel cats through the ice? If so, what type of structure do you usually fish? What is the preffered bait for winter catfish? I’ve never done this but am curious
I never target them but I do catch quite few on a local reservoir mostly on spikes but some times on a minnow. We catch them in the basin and the channel they will mix right in with the crappies and walleyes.
Deep basins, crappie holes. They roam much like the crappies do, suspended over deep holes near sharp break lines. Up here on the Horseshoe chain, we do well with glow buckshots and a jig and minnow. If it will catch a crappie, it will catch a catfish. Glow colors seem to work best.
Me and a couple other guys fished the chain Friday and iced probably over 100 cats in 5 hrs fishin on chicken liver and 1/8 oz regular glow jig. All in a deep 30+ft basin
I have years a go on the Red River south of Fargo Moorhead. On rivers I would try deepest holes I could find, fish in front or behind the hole. If the fish are negative fish right in the hole. Take it easy on them CPR would be a good idea as the fish can be very vulnerable this time of year,
Stuck another 65+ fish night last night. Chicken liver was/has been the ticket 10:1 over pinched fatheads. Glow green jig about 2-10′ off the bottom. Enjoy.
