Cat Tip of the Day – Santee Cooper Rig in Action

I do a lot of trolling and drifting for cats on the St Croix and have played around with a lot of different presentation rigs. The Santee Cooper rig is the primary one I use now because it helps from getting hung up. I’ve always wondered what my rig looks like as it is sliding through the water and this Youtube video provides a pretty good picture. Sometimes getting that hunk of cut bait up in the hookup zone helps a fish pick up the scent a little better and to find your bait offering. This isn’t just a good drift rig – if you are trying to place a bait on a good current seam this presentation is pretty effective. If you have trouble getting bites with your bait laying on the bottom I would recommend getting it up about a foot or so and see if that helps you get fish. Check out this video:

    That’s great Steve!

I’ve found in the cold water (like now) I have more strike when the Sudden Impact is off the bottom.

In using my camera, there’s channels all around, with some checking the bait out and a few taking the bait, but more will take the bait (this time of year) when it’s held off the bottom.

That’s the perfect rig for my winter time channel catting!

    Thanks!

Now that is slicker than grease Steve! Definitely going to tie a few of these up this winter for use next year!

There is nothing magic about my home waters. I still see some people who fish the bottom and it says one thing to me: I don’t know what I am doing. Especially anywhere there is current, it is perfectly natural for food to be in the water column.

I know Kev. I think that fishing channels in a lake forces you to be a little more creative with your presentations anyway. For most of us who fish the river, it is second nature to just throw it out to sit on the bottom. I am definitley trying this rig as well as more drifting next season.

Plus, it gives me something else to sit and tie up as I dream of open water.
