i hate to be the negitive nancy here but im going to have to wave the BS flag here i have caught 50+” sturgeon on proper sized gear and those fish gave my reel a workout, i assume you were using walleye tackle and if thats the case a fish that size with that power would have melted your drag in a matter of minutes and more than likely would have spooled you, also the fact that you cant seem to email yourself a pic to post it leads me to believe this may be a fish tale, if its not and i see a pic i will publicly apologize until then, pics or it didnt happen.

Seen a pic of a 67″ sturgeon that was caught threw the ice on the croix. That thing was a thick telephone pole. Guess it took over two hours to get with 10# test. Still not sure how they got it threw the hole. Next time I talk to the guy Ill see if he wants to post it on here. Think he left it off line when he caught it due to it being out of season.

I sure hope that picture is posted as well.

Is it possible? Well the Croix population is fairly young so one would say it’s unlikely. However with the high water over the last couple years and the dam rollers being left open, it’s not too far fetched that a fish from the ‘sippi (Lake Pepin) could have migrated up. The commercial fishermen down their report fish that size and larger frequently in their nets.

If the OP is worried about catching a sturgeon out of season, don’t. It happens all the time. As long as it’s caught, ID’d, measured, photoed and released you’re within the law.

Whether you post it or not, I’m sure you’ll never forget that day!!

    Well now!

I’m going to have to start rethinking how to land Sturgeon while guiding.

A 65″ fish is trouble bringing in the boat. When we start talking close to 80″ I’m thinking my clients are going to have to start going in the water for photos.

    Awesomely nice fish Bfisherman!!

Largest I’ve ever seen out of the Croix!

Did she swim away in good condition?

Great Googily Moogily! You sure you weren’t on the Rainy river! Kudos to the DNR for helping turn the Croix sturgeon around.

If you want to get technical it was actually over 77″ because of the fact that we didn’t take the time to try and straighten it out and pinch the tail. We were more concerned about getting the fish back in the water. The fish was incredible. You don’t have to believe it for it to be fact. There were plenty of witnesses.

Judging by the size of his hand compared to the sturgeon shoulders it is resting on, its hard to believe it isn’t all of 76 or whatever inches.
