We had a chance to do some “fishing” with the MarCum camera yesterday. As expected, the wintering holes were holding fish. Not as many as in Jan/Feb, but a good number.

One thing I did observe that I didn’t in the colder water was when the camera bumped into them, they started moving. In Jan/Feb I’ve bounced the camera off their snouts and they just take it like they’re dead.

Even coming up from behind them, when the camera hit their sides, they started moving. It didn’t look like they moved very far and some didn’t seem to relocate at all, but it was evident it bothered them.

I’ve tried placing dead baits and live/dead fatheads around them, without any luck but I don’t think they’ll move very far to get the bait. If my bait is off by 24 inches, I doubt they will move to take it.

We could see around 2 to 3 feet with the camera. The water is clearing, but it’s not good enough for recording yet.

The fish weren’t biting, but they were there!

Duh! That’s because you need to change bait. They love jigs this time of year over live and cutbait. You need a heavy 1-5oz jig for these beasts to keep the jig vertical in the current. They won’t bite unless you jig up and down hard like they do when they fish for squid.

    Will a swimbait work?

    In-Fish Frosty Flatheads<

I believe they have changed their thoughts since this was made. I haven’t seen John Lehto at Everts for a few years. Last time I saw him he was fishing for eyes/sauger in the winter.

Think the best way to target those gar Brian is to first get in the water with them.

That’s the best idea I’ve heard so far!

I’ll be working on a video tonight.

Just thinking of the last flathead Coley had the camera on…yeah, some where between 2 and 3 feet.

When ice fishing, the days are short, if the camera doesn’t work at night it’s worthless 60% of the time.
