For a quick cheap ball cap light check out Fleet Farm. They have the small master vision ones on sale right now for 6.99 and 7.99. Think its the G5 and G6 models. Great lights for short distance close up stuff. They will work for netting a fish, removing hooks or tying lines. Not going to work as a spot light.
They have simple on off switch with only a white light. No strobe or colors to click threw. Still not sure why anyone would want a strobe light on their head. The G5 is about as simple as it gets. The G6 you can pivot the light up and down a bit. Dont think this model will hold up as long as the G5 but for $7 if it gets me threw a fall and winter Im happy.
October 30, 2012 at 3:48 am #1108307I have been using a Streamlight Septor for about 5 years never had an issue and has three settings of brightness and the highest will outdue any other headlamp out there at that price point.
October 30, 2012 at 3:57 am #1108309Hey Jimbo, Mike and Joe gave a good options.
I have a little different thought then many when it comes to head lamps.
What’s important to me is:
1) I can see the floor of the boat for tripping hazards.
2) I can see the rod tips for bite detection.
3) The light doesn’t draw insects.
4) It’s inexpensive to run.
5) Fairly inexpensive (in case it goes in the drink)** Disclaimer. I use mine for clients. Your preferences may vary.
I’ve found over the last eight years this is a great little work horse of a light.
Rayovac SPHLTLED-B Sportsman LED Headlight
Rayovac SPHLTLED-B sportsman headlamp adjustable headband is comfortable, lightweight and water resistant. It features three in one technology; red LED for night vision, white LED for close range and long range krypton beam. This head lamp runs on three double A batteries that are included. Two hundred hours of run time and never need to replace the LED bulb.
I remove the “spotlight” bulb to save on the batteries so there’s only the white led for close up tying on hooks ect work and the red led’s for watching the rod tips and seeing in the boat.
Can’t really see much past the end of the rod tips unless it has a reflective tape or animal eyes which is ok by me. We have a spot light if we need to see further.
I’ll get three 6-7 hour evenings out of the three AAA batteries before needing them replaced. I know there are some guides that have gone with rechargeable and this works well I hear.
I started out with five of these 8 years ago. Lost one to the river and one was stepped on. Just bought 2 more a couple months ago for spares as I heard they were discontinued.
It’s a great little workhorse of a light.
I really only hear one complaint from my customers and that’s some folks don’t care for the band that goes around your head.
Current Price: $14.00 without searching for the best buy.
October 30, 2012 at 1:00 pm #1108338The very best light is one you can find that works when you need it to and to have a spare when it doesn’t and another one for your fishing partner when they forget theirs. I go with a cheap cap light, and I get half a dozen of them when I can find them on sale somewhere.
November 3, 2012 at 3:25 pm #1109430I picked up a Coleman from FleetFarm that I like a lot because it was the brightest one there. My model does not have the other colors though, which could be an issue with the bugs. I believe that Coleman does have one that has the red and blue colors.

I have the Coleman Axis. It’s bright like Pug says but I have the one with the red and blue led options also. Works fantastic and I haven’t hadto buy another since. It’sgoing on three years old now I beleave. Pretty water resistant too. Sat through lots ofrain and it still keeps on going.

Mine got wet. I forget how, but once wet it would very dimly be on when off, because the water was conducting and bypassing the switch. However I took it apart for the day letting it air out and then it was fine. I do think they are one of the brightest and that’s why I like them.
