River Monster

On Lake Wisconsin we get to tangle with these fish several times every year while walleye fishing. The usually crush a crankbait while trolling with planer boards and proceed to destroy tackle so I rarely get a big one in the boat. Clients get pretty excited when it happens and I just chalk it up to another “river monster”. Caught my personal best flathead today on a B Fish N B3 blade. 8Lb test so it took a while. No measurements taken so not sure of the weight. It was enough fun that I can see why people fish for them on purpose.

Wow, thats awesome on Walleye gear. They fight a wee bit harder then those dish rags.

Nice camera boat shot Mr. Sanders!

I was brand new to the river in 1980 when I started working with a river guy from Iowa. We were fishing some back waters of the Vermilion River when he hooked into something BIG. The fight didn’t last very long when his (what I would’ve called) heavy hook was bent straight.

From that time on the interest to catch and see what those “river monsters” really were just kept growing.

They are a blast to catch and like bow hunting for deer, a lot of pre-planning and set up is required to be successful regularly.

Come to think of it, it’s not much different then trophy walleye fishing. We’re not looking for numbers of fish, just that one big one. Like all fishing, it can be very frustrating and rewarding. LOL!

    Thanks for sharing!
