    Hey guys,
With all the talk of cats recently on this forum, I’m looking into giving it a try. I have never fished for them, but have caught one by accident. From the sounds of it, I need some stink bait of sorts and a heavy rod. My question is, what type of structure do I look for…open flats, drop-offs, rocks, mud, etc. Do cats generally hang shallow or deep? Try not to ridicule my questions but if you feel the need, let me have it. Like I said, this is a whole new ball of wax for me. Thanks for steering me in the right direction. I just finished a new carpet job in my boat so now is the time to take up slimy, stink bait fishing

Fish deeper water during the day and shoreline water at night, where they come into too feed at night. Stink bait is a good place to start for bait, its hard to beat day in and day out. It takes a big fish to break 15 lb. test when the reels drag is set right, just adjust it and your good to go. Good luck and have fun…

A few cats in the boat should remedy that.

Seriously though, Ryan gives solid advice. Circle hooks are my choice when using anything other thanlive bait. Dont be afraid of the larger hooks as cats are not shy. Another thing to keep in mind is if your not getting bites after trying a few tybes of baits, I would move within an hour at the most. Good luck and welcome to the world of catfishing.

Thanks for the advice guys. I’m a bit nervous about the new carpet, might have to throw a sacrifical piece down in case I actually catch one of these things. Sounds like some sudden impact is in line from Team Catfish and a trip to fleet farm for some new gear. Are the channel cats more often upriver or down on the lake (pepin)? I watched a video of BK not long ago that makes this look easy!

The fish in the river are easier to catch, for me anyway. Watch the current seams and you’ll be fine.

Stop in at Everts or 4 Seasons and support our catfish expert sponsors. The both have everything you’ll need anyway. I’m working on Fleet Farm to start handling the Team Catfish line…but that’s another story.

Here’s a tip that will make life easier for you. If you’re planning on using Sudden Impact, bend down the barbs on the treble hook. Heck I bend down the barb on a circle hook to make them a pliers free un hook.

As long as your line is tight, there’s no need for the barbs.

I found with all stink baits the normal reaction is to load them up with as much bait as possible. My experience has shown that most of that bait gets thrown off on the cast. So watch as your casting. If there’s bait going every which way, cut down on it. As long as there’s fibers on the hook it’s attracting fish.

What else? I think it was Ryan above that said to use a couple baits. Most definitely! If you can, I would have one rod with cut sucker (easy to get) and two flavors of stink. Let the fish tell you what they want that day or night.

I’m always surprised when one stink out performs another and the next day it’s the other way around.

Ask away with the questions. There’s a ton of knowledge on this forum and we all don’t fish the same way for the same fish.

Good luck, but most of all…Have Fun!

There has been no remedy for depth of water lately that has worked for me. Been catching them in 6″ of water to 35ft deep. Cut sucker or cut bluegill ( if legal) have been the best. I put a section of indoor outdoor carpet over my carpet so the cats don’t chit all over it. As for stinkbaits, your not allowed in my boat if you bring that stuff along.
