Robby’s post made me wonder as I often have in the past, does anyone know a non-intrusive reliable way to determine whether a flathead is a male or female? We all have theories, but I’m talking a legit scientific way.

Such a loaded question with so much opportunity.

I usually wait until they leave to go to the bathroom, then watch which door they come out! Sorry about that. My godfather told me that once.

Sexing a flathead, hmm. Sounds like something they do down in Arkansas.

Sorry I couldn’t resist this one. The females are the the ones that talk too much. They also seem to have larger mouths and are more moody than the males.

    Understandable.

    It’s hard isn’t it.

It’s not a totally reliable method, but the males usually have whiskers. The females generally don’t have whiskers because they wax.

I knew this thread would go down hill once Brian chimed in and he didn’t disappoint me. Thanks Brian.

Once Brian chimed in? This thread was doomed from the instant it was created. I mean, c’mon. We all know the type of clowns we are and you (not necessarily you) still decide to create a thread titled ‘sexing a flathead’? What did you think was going to happen.

I’m not being a negative nancy, I just think it’s funny that anyone would expect anything less.

Large flatheads sex determination can be made by observing body shape. Males head are much wider than their body. Females body will equal or exceed the width of their head.

    Male flathead

    Female flathead

Immature fish must be identified by direct examination of the sex organs. You must open a flap in the anal area. Males have 2 opennings and females have an addition openning for eggs.
