Pool’s 3 and 4 of the Mississippi are SMOKING hot for channels and flatheads right now!

If you’ve been wanting to get out, now it the time! Fishing mornings and evenings to avoid the hottest part of the day works well unless you like the heat.

For channel cats the bait of choice is “whatever you have”. Stink, cut, Spam, shrimp it doesn’t really matter they are on the chew!! Almost forgot, Rapalas. I had one report of over 30 channels being caught over sand in 2 feet or less of water.

Flatheads are being caught on bullheads and suckers and of course RRR has to remind us of a jig and 1/2 a crawler.

Water levels are about 1 foot high yet for this time of year but the flow has dropped to a manageable level @ 21,000. cfs.

The Everts Resort report from rrr (edited):

There are 25 to 30 people staying at EVERTS this week. All of them fishing Cats. They are catching them BIG TIME!! The Hot Summer CAT BITE is ON!

Right now is the best time to grab a friend or take your favorite kid out fishing. They won’t lose interest by waiting very long for a channel cat bite!

    Cat Fishing Paradise

Never would have thought of calling cat fishing “paradise”… guess I shouldn’t be judgmental until I’ve tried it.

The one weekend that I can’t get out fishing

BK, do you think this bite will keep going for awhile (into next week) or will it be wrapped up by the weekend?

Cat fishing is one of the fastest growing sports. Some are comparing it to the Muskie fishing explosion.

All I can say is that there’s more walleye guys that will say “I thought I had the state record walleye on” when it turns out to be a channel cat then cat guys saying “I thought I had the state record cat fish on” then finding out it was a walleye! LOL!

Taking a kid fishing for sunfish is great for the younger kid, but once they get a little older, and you want them to have some hard fighting action…it’s cats hands down.

Jake, I would assume so, but you know Ma Nature. She doesn’t like to be told what to do.

Try fretting over whether it will still be hot in TWO weeks! Have fished some tougher conditions out of Everts the past couple years, and you can still manage to put fish in the boat if you are persistant.

You might be right, hell; they have noodling contests on TV, it only makes sense that Cat Fishing is the next big thing.

Do you think the first Big Catfishing Star will have all his teeth

I think we could place bets on how many teeth the next catfishing star will be missing.

Or if we really wanted to, we could bet on how many uppers are missing, and how many lowers are missing!

The one on the right. The one on the left is a star already.

That is because some anglers develop into folks that want to take on the challenge of angling the apex predator instead of the bait. Once you set hook and it takes a full grown man to hold on, fishing for other species is just a pastime. I like to do a lot of different things but when the cats are going where else can you get 30 fish over 10lbs in one session?

    BAD, BAD, BAD…

Now I have pictures of a crazed man in a white coat and surgical mask bent over someone’s face with a drill shrieking:

Who’s your dentist? WHO’S your dentist? Huh? Who’s your dentist?

I agree .. I thought pike was the hardest fighting but was I wrong.. Cats are the best fighting pull you over under and wondering if your line is gonna make it.

A 15# channel cat is about the biggest fight most people are ever going to see… even a 7# channel will stip gears out of a sturdy big-game reel.

Personally I think pound-for-pound a channel cat is the fightingest fish in our waters. A flattie or a river sturgeon are right up there but they have the huge mass behind them… a channel cat is just attitude with a skeleton.

My big flat @40# must have just spawned because she gave me no real fight, I was just dragging her in. Kind of what you might expect from a 40# walleye.

I never understand the argument about what fish fights the hardest. You can’t compare most species because they all fight so differently.

I caught a decent smallmouth the other day that jumped it’s body length six times. It was the most fun catching a fish I have had in a while.

I love white bass on light tackle as they know how to use the current.

Sturgeon seem to combine a bunch of different fighting characteristics .

Carp are very good at bull dogging you up and down a river bank.

But I do agree on one thing, no matter how hard James tried to convince himself in the IDO fishing show, walleye do not fight.

Maybe pound for pound cats pull like dead weight.. I guess if I had a 7# smallie it would probably fight harder than a 7# cat..but I’ll never know

With talk like that, I’m guessing you haven’t caught a ten pound walleye yet.

I’m going to have to send Jeff a link to this thread.

My wife caught a 9.5 lb 29″ walleye once. On a bullhead. Jiggled the rod time about as much as the bullhead did. Didn’t manage to set off the bait clicker, either. When we pulled it in we thought it was a snag… like a shoe.

We were out fishing for catfish.

Two summers ago (2010) we found a fantastic high-water spot on Pool 2. Crazy night… mad numbers in the boat. We were using bullheads and cut sucker.

The by-catch for the night was a 27-28″ 7#+ walleye… on a bullhead, in about 13″ of water. Stupid bait stealers.

Same thing happened to a different buddy, same spot, about 2 weeks later. Poor guy thought he had snagged a boot. Turned out to be a 28″ walleye. At least a boot will tumble in the current a bit and keep you guessing.

Catfish fight so hard, we have to fish alternating days. Unlike walleye guys, we need a day to recover. Even a guy like lhprop needs a recovery day in between.
