Long story short, I can’t get the boat out for a while and I want to try bank fishing. I’ve tried it once or twice before, but I’ve never caught anything.

Please give me some pointers on how to catch fish the way our ancestors did. I’m only a few miles from Black Dog, so that’s probably where I’ll be going.

Quite a few good spots to try off Blackdog. Anywhere you can pul over and walk to the bank will do. Get some dead suckers, some stink bait and tubes, and some 3oz no rolls and have at it! I’ve seen some big channels come out of that area.

If you want to use live suckers or bullheads, just up your weight to a 4 or 5oz and a 8/0 octopus J hook. Others will jump in as well.

Hell, use a 1oz egg and a nightcrawler and you’ll catch SOEMTHING

Yeah, I tried that last year when the water was really high. All I got was blue heron who swooped in too low and got wrapped up in my line.

Water’s low now. Heron danger: minimal

I’m one of the wierdos that will take a boat to a bank fishing spot. Use a site like Google Earth to search a streach of river for a good looking spot. Get a plat book too if you need landowner info for permission. I know a lot of the Miss can be tough to find good bank spots but they’re out there. Head on up the Minnesota a ways and there are a ton of spots. Especially if you own a small donkey to carry all your crap.

There’s something I enjoy about a lawn chair, a cigar, a beer, a campfire, and a rod on a stick waiting for a clicker.

My idea of bank fishing is a cooler for your nightcrawlers and shrimp of course. A comfy chair set yourself up throw in your lines and just wait and wait and wait..check bait and toss out further, you’ll be amazed at what 5ft further will sometimes give you either a snag or a bite. good luck!

So I went and got me some shrimp and some chicken livers and I’ve got them sitting outside right now. You’re supposed to let them get all stinky, right?

I have been meaning to try some spots in the Red Wing area that have produced in the past, but it has been too hot. Tonight, I tried one of the favorites, and it was still too hot. But……..in an hour, I caught 4 big sheephead, a smallie that was feisty, but illegal, five big gills (biggest was 9″ …13 ounces) and a white bass that made 1.5 lbs. I did manage to lose my personal best ( well it would have been!) crappie by being an idiot. ( if I don’t practice, i could never be this good!) it was just as long as the silver, but quite a bit deeper. Oh, well, I guess I will just have to fish some more!

I curse at Blackdog. I know some decent fish have come from the area, but I hit it hard a few years back since it is so close and have nothing to show for it.

Lived in that area for 8 years… All I have ever caut at Blackdog was one sheepshead and one 2-3# channel.

Always wondered what might be lurking in that lake tho…

Nothing significant. 2-3# flathead. Couple 1-2# channels.

Not much now. They drained it last fall or early this spring?

Dammit… That sucks. I always imagined it being a no-mans-land of mutant huge fish… Pike, gar, carp, flat and channel, sheepshead…

I wonder what they really found in there?

The lake side of that area sucks for shore fishing tho.

There are many decent shore spots along the MN from Blackdog to the confluence though… lots of them in the state park below the airport/Ft. Snelling.

There wasn’t much in there. Just a bunch of sheepies and carp, if I remember. Someone posted pictures here last year when it was being drained. People were going down there and just grabbing 5 gal buckets of flopping fishes.

I came away with a big ol’ skunkaroo. When I left around 11:00 pm, there wasn’t a single car parked between the plant and the overflow dam. Everyone must have been getting skunked.

That’s the 3rd or 4th time I’ve fished there with the same result. I need to find somewhere else to fish.

Might I suggest the wing dam just South of Everts?

Stop in and check with Steve for the current bite down that way. Bring your lawn chairs ect.

I would suggest a mixture of cut bait, Sudden Impact or a crawler. At least one rod with a live bullhead or sucker. Or all of them if you have enough rods an people. Fish both up and down stream of the wingie….it’s sticking out of the water so you can’t miss it!

Yeah, I really do need to branch out, but it’s tough when black dog is less than 5 miles from my house. I’ll have to check that out one of these weekends when I get the next free evening to fish. Unfortunately, those are few and far between right now.

Just a suggestion of a sandy beach with a wing dam in front of it. Certainly not as close as Blackdog.

I’ve caught fish off the boat dock at Everts… caught a nice 3 lb channel there one day when I was down there. The river is full of fish… everywhere. Crawlers, cut, stink… what you catch may depend on the bait you use, but you just gotta get out there and put bait in the water.

There are plenty of places in the Cities on the Miss… Mill Ruin, Bohemian Flats, Mississippi River Park North (west bank from Washington all the way to 694)… those should all be on maps, they stretch from 694 to a ways past St. Anthony Falls.

There’s also Coon Rapids Dam, Rice Creek and Islands of Peace… all county parks along the Mississippi from Coon Rapids south to Fridley.

There’s so many places to fish out there it’s mind blowing, really… I think that’s the problem, half the time. The options are overwhelming.
