Got a 38 Saturday night. I released him to see if he will grow to 60.

Nice fish! What’s up with the top of its mouth?

    Nice one Robby.

What were you using for bait? What river?

I caught this male from a S E Ohio lake on a bluegill.

I noted the injury. I figure this fish was hooked on a limbline and tore the hook free causing the gash. I released
the fish and hope he grows to 60 pounds.

Speaking of injuries on cats, here’s a weird one I caught two years back at LD # 3. Never could figure out what happened to this one:

I would bet you’re right about the limb line.Hoping you catch it at 60+ .Should be easy to identify.

Yeah, sure looks like a limb line injury. It got hooked, but spent so much time on the line without being reeled in, it was able to tear itself free.

Doug, was that “injury” symmetrical? To me if a fish oddity is irregular, it is normally a wound. If it is symmetrical, I usually chalk it up to a genetic mutation.

Hey Mike, you can see in the pic that the bottom whiskers had grown in. There was a knobby growth in the middle of the lower jaw, but other than that it was pretty symmetrical. It hit stink bait pretty hard and was otherwise no worse for wear, so it was eating.

Ah, glancing at it I thought the lower jaw was stunted. I see it a little better now.

I certainly wouldn’t call it a small one, but I get it. I dream of fish like that. Looks like a nice start to the season anyway.

At first I thought maybe someone cut out a bit of the lip to ID it in the future, but I suppose am injury from a set line is more likely.
