If the weather was a “10” on Friday

I would have given Saturday a “8′ or a “3” (depending on if you were under a storm cell or not) and a “2” last night.

What a temp change! Fog rolling across the water, condensation on everything. The only bright spot was that it didn’t freeze, although with the 88 degree temps on Saturday…it sure felt like it.

    Come on back Summer!

The weather only gets such low marks on days/nights the fish don’t bite, right?

seems friday late afternoon, cue the clouds and rain to roll in… stay shi77y all weekend, then sunday night, cue the sky to clear out and the sun to shine for the last hour or 2… and back to work for a glorious week of weather.. until friday night again…

    Exactly.

The campfire at Everts on Saturday was cozy. Caught up with a bunch of friends that I see often but don’t get a chance to talk with.

Our Saturday outing would have been cancel at 10pm because of lightning in the area.

Sunday night we boated a 14 pounder and we had a 5 second fight with a good fish before the hook popping out. Guessing it was a state record at least.

The good thing was the cloud that has been over my head all week seems to have dissipated.

Aaron and I made it down at a little past 7pm Sat and Kari was kind enough to open the shop for us. Picked up half a dozen bullys (should have got a few more) and a few other supplies and headed out towards the dam. Aaron wanted to try for walleye for a while before we set up for cats.

I could see the lightning to the north and west. I was a little nervous but as I watched the radar it seemed that everything was going around us, but just to be on the cautious side we set up fairly close to the resort for our first spot, then even closer for our second and last spot. The second spot was where I would start wishing I had a few more bullheads especially since 1 of them didn’t survive the move.I rigged on a fresh lively bully and right off I got a run and I missed the hookset. All I ended up with was a mangled dead bullhead. I put another on and got another run but this time it was just a quick grab and drop, but again I ended up with a crushed bullhead. Put another on and proceeded to promptly cast him off my hook . Last bullhead ended up in a snag and I had to break off. Thats five down and the only other one is on my one of my brothers lines.

The big save for the evening was cutting up one of the mangled ones and Aaron ended up with one of his biggest channels ever.

It was nice meeting you Kari, and we both aggreed that the resort is in much, much better hands now. We will for sure be coming down there more often this summer!

So what you are actually saying is since all these said people where sitting around the campfire and you snuck up on them so they couldn’t flee.

Stevens, it sounds like you may have been dealing with channels the whole time? When in the mood, they are good at tearing up bullheads on a hook.

Yeah Pug, that definitely crossed my mind. I have even gotten a few channels on live bullheads in the past, and the way these where hitting like short bursts then a real slow pull.

Yeah, I have nothing to back it up, but I generally will chalk a mangled bullhead up to a channel. IMHO, if I miss a flathead 75% of the time the bullhead will be gone or just smashed and scraped. If some a bullhead comes back mangled, I assume it was a channel. My theory is they both feed differently. Flatheads gulp, smash and swallow. Channels grab tear and swallow. I base that on my marine biology degree I printed off the internet.
