Caught a little, my first, flathead tonight! Was in the lower 20inch region, but put a nice fight in the kayak. Got all the footage on the GoPro, so it’ll be a little untill I can edit and upload, but I will post to show you. First thing I thought when I saw the cat was “BK”, haha. Hope to tackle the editing real soon, but thought I’d share!

Congrats!
I’m my opionon it’s better to start small and work up to the larger fish than to catch a 45 or 50 pounder right away.
Looking forward to it!

I’ve been telling myself that for years. Thanks for that
May 8, 2012 at 10:44 am #1066513Wait until you hook into a good one, its unreal feeling the power of those fish because they go almost anywhere they want too and sometimes, no matter what you do. If your fishing in snags you want too set the hook good and get them out and as far away from the snags as you can. Don’t be afraid of loosing the fish because if he gets wrapped around a couple underwater snags, theres a good chance your going to loose him anyway.
I watched a guy who I knew through the grapevine fish a flathead here in town probably 25 years ago. I went to that area to fish flatheads and he happened to be there and he already had this big flathead on. I asked him how big it was and he said a nice one. I asked how long he had had this one hooked and he said for over an hour.
What had happened is in this spot theres a pipe that goes from one side of the river to the other and when they layed this pipe years ago they had to dynamite the limestone out to lay this pipe and they never covered it back up. This fish wrapped itself around this pipe and just laid there. Rex Weaver was this guys name and had fished flatheads all his life and as I stood there with Rex watching, the line went limp and we both gave out a big sigh. So try to get the fish hooked good and then pull like heck to get them away from the snags. Have some fun this year guys trying for the big ones because I and my friends are going too.
May 8, 2012 at 11:17 am #1066517My first one was about 12″, so you are way ahead of me.
Welcome to the addiction.
May 15, 2012 at 1:24 am #1068198LOL! I was thinking the same! You see how far I went out from the fish, started on the bank and then into the middle of the river! Was so much fun, and plenty of more fishing this summer in the kayak, nothing like fishing from it either!
May 15, 2012 at 1:45 am #1068204It looked like you almost made a complete 360 with that fish going everywhere, nice catch Corey.
May 15, 2012 at 2:02 am #1068210That looks like fun…and a lot of work! Nice job. I just hope that when you get a 40# fish, heck a 20# flathead a barge isn’t making its way up the river.

I put this young man on his first flathead.
I am sure he will be fine once he fishes enough to realize he is not an expert
This young man surprised me that he could hold up his first flathead.
Fishing on their own I reckon most flathead fishermen learn to experience the patience necessary to get their first bite.

Someone commented earlier that it might be better to stuggle through the sizes to better appreciate trophy flathead.
That was Ryans first flathead.May 17, 2012 at 5:08 am #1068841I’m thinking Corey would have drown catching one of those fish out of his kayak Robbie.
