I look forward to the side by side test. I’ll bring the crackers for the tie breaker.

New stink bait?

Well we took the concoction out for a test this weekend. The flavor is spot on, had several solid hits, and landed one small channel in the morning. The water was high but dropping, and Cut bait brought the most action. We lost a few big bullies over night and one flat was landed at 14.5 lbs on a bullhead. The cornstarch and lard gave it great stick, but with the heavy current and the tub sitting in the sun all afternoon, it still washed off a bit too quick. By Morning when I got up it was in the 50s and the consistency was just about prefect. Might use a small cooler I found on the river last year to keep the tub cool.
May 14, 2012 at 6:13 pm #1068081One of my favorite ingredients for stink bait is minnows. Much like leaving the liver on the porch for a few days, I leave my dead minnows in a gallon ziplock bag in the sun. Then after they’re soft, it only takes about a day, I mix them in with an electric mixer.
On a side note, a lot of the channels I’ve been catching (and missing) haven’t been running with the stink bait like usual. They just tug on it enough to make the ends of my poles bounce.
May 14, 2012 at 6:30 pm #1068087Mike, remind me to pass on the margaritas at your house.
Normally when I run into the “bounce but no fish” bite, it’s a sign of the little guys pecking. ‘Course since I seldom catch them (when they are that small), I really don’t have anyway to know for sure.
May 14, 2012 at 6:59 pm #1068093My margaritas are good; not blended and made with agave nectar… It’s one of the few things I taught myself to do right (that must be why I don’t catch any fish).
May 14, 2012 at 7:19 pm #1068095Our side by side comparison got called off fairly quickly when Joe started using cut bait and had a giant channel cat smash a 10′ dead sucker. Fought it for 5 minutes with the St. Croix and the hook must’ve ripped out of it’s face because all that came back was about 1/3 of the sucker head.
That one will grow larger in our minds as the one that got away…

May 18, 2012 at 6:45 pm #1069221Tentative plan is for a fishing marathon over Memorial Day weekend. I can’t wait!

May 29, 2012 at 2:47 pm #1071917Well the new formulation did well this weekend. All the 10 or so channels we caught were on stink bait. Dfresh was using secret 7 and I was using the home made concoction. We were split even on fish but Dfresh beat me on weight. We need more data to make a good analysis of the effectiveness but the early trends are looking good for the home made stink bait. Between the stink bait and the cut bait we had in the boat, we had buzzards circling while we were fishing The Cat Tracker is sitting out in the sun for a few days to decontaminate.
May 29, 2012 at 2:59 pm #107192110-4 on the more data.
I was out Sunday for 4 hours running and gunning. Two little bites that might have been sheephead.
I was using Secret 7 and Sudden Impact fishing areas that I knew should have held fish. With the rising water, the whole river was a brown, muddy paste moving very fast down stream. We fished shallow in 2 fow and deep in 18 fow and couldn’t raise a fish.
Heck, even old Pete struggled with Sonny’s on Monday. His group switched up to White Bass.
