New stink bait?

After having good luck adding chopped liver and blood to a nearly empty tub of sonny’s blood bait I decided to try making some of my own. I had a pig butchered last fall and I just got a 1/4 of a beef this spring so I had lots of liver in the freezer. I finely chopped about 5 lbs of liver and let it fester on the porch for a day before folding in about 2 cups of corn meal and about 12 slices of processed cheese slices for texture. It looks about the consistency of Sonnie’s and is already smelling awesome! I’ll update if I have any luck with the formula.

Best post ever. Some would argue that the cost/benefit analysis of trying to make your own stink bait comes out at ‘just not worth the risk’ but you have always been a pioneer Joe!

    Cool!

I can smell it from here!

Leave it to the cat fishing guys to make up and try their own stuff. I can see it now…

Swollen-3 being marketed across the Midwest!

Which reminds me, might not want to leave that in the sun unattended for too long. I’ve heard many not so happy story’s about “live” stink baits exploding.

Looking forward to hearing the out come Goat!

Sometimes a person just can’t look at the cost when it’s minimal and knowing you’re catching fish on something a persons made.

    Tying flies for example.

Add about a 1/4 cup of salt to help it stay stable and enhance the flavor.

If it aint sticky enough, try adding some Crisco (not the butter flavor though)to it. That will thicken it some, but not much, but it will also make it a little more sticky. Sounds like a good recipe to me. Should work just fine. Can’t wait for the results.

I left the lid a little loose just in case it ‘splodes. Also moved it from the back porch to the boat shed to keep the lady of the house happy. I wonder if lard would work to thicken it a bit. Turns out I have a mess of that in the freezer too. Thinkin’ I might give it a try this afternoon.

That should do the trick too. It’ll make it a little sticky too. Good luck.

I will never get this. Take the time you are spending making that and go fishing! You can get a big assed pail of Sonnys blood for dirt cheap at Catfish Connection and it doesn’t need fixing.

Kevin, you know me. I’m stuck in many of my ways, but letting others try different things is how improvements are made that we can all use.

I have a hard time Poo Pooing anyone for having fun doing whatever they are doing…whether I would do it or not, is not the point. Heck whether they catch more fish with it isn’t even the point.

I’m not poo pooing anyone. I’m sure Goat knows what he is doing. my blood pressure is off the charts lately due to a huge project I am working on and the dang weatherman ruining my few days off with cruddy weather. my son Jonas has to have his tonsils out in a few weeks to put a cherry on top. I had to drop 700 dollars on brakes last week on a 14 year old vehicle I can’t afford to replace. I had to fix a hole in my boat. This year is just plain sucking for me so far it isn’t half over yet and a root canal replacement is in my near future. I just might load my guns and my rods in my leaky boat and drive to Alaska to live by myself in the woods.

Add some garlic powder too, it really does work well.

For the tonsils or root canal?

Gave it a try this afternoon. I got bites on it in a spot known for little cats, but no solid hits. It needs a bit more thickness and some fat to stick. I’m thawing some lard to add tomorrow. It was 81 degrees in the sun on the river so it was pretty runny and would wash off in about 5-6 minuets. Honestly I spent about 5 minuets chopping liver and another 6 minuets mixing as I went. For the cost of about 4 cups of corn meal, I’ll have about 2 gallons of blood bait. Plus the stuff is awesomly gross.

Heck Brian I don’t know, maybe it’ll work on both, a good stinkbait bait with medicinal properties, all ya need is a toothbrush and a gargeling solution, water from the minnow bucket maybe? you can sure tell this is a catfish bait thread.

Melt some ivory soap into it, that will thicken it up and.. I’m sure everyone knows “that guy” that uses ivory soap for catfishing.

So I finally got around to adjusting the formula. I added about a pint of lard and about a cup of corn starch. Mixed in it really added a nice stick to the bait. On the suggestion of my Girlfriend, I did a test, dipping a stick in the bait and soaking it in water for a while. I left it in for 20 min and it held up pretty well. Not an exact replication of river conditions, but a good indicator. I probably won’t be able to give it a proper field test until this weekend, but I’ll follow up if we have any luck.

She dry heaved a bit when I was mixing it on the porch, so I think it must be just about right.

I forgot the test stick in the jar of water over night, early results look good for viscosity and tackiness. Sure smells like sonny’s. OOh, can’t wait till this weekend, we’re gonna do a Secret 7 vs. Secret Chocolate chip side by side comparison on the Minnesota River.
