Humminbird SmartCast, anyone ever use?

Has anyone ever used one of these? I was considering getting some type of depth measuring device, but need to find something small (limited space and definitely don’t have room for a external battery).

These seemed like a reasonable investment if they actually worked. Anyone with experience with them?

I’ve never made a smart cast in my life.

I’ve read the description in catalogs and went hmmm.

Just wondering, if a fella used a slip bobber, the measured the length from the hook to the bobber stop, wouldn’t that do the same?

I’m not that familiar with them so don’t shoot me if I’m way off the bottom here.

Hah, just cause I use paddles for a motor, doesn’t mean I have to be entirely inefficient!

I reckon that method would be alright for a spot I was sitting in for long periods.. I was thinking of doing some long upriver paddling (5-10 miles?) and then float down and watch the depths and such and kinda just watch for spots that seem like they might have something fun.

There’s claims that you can pick out structure and such with them, but I trust first hand reports more than reviews that might have been written by the company themselves!

They make some pretty compact sonar units now. I have a lowrance X67C on my bow, and I have an ice kit for ice fishing. You can set it pretty much anywhere in a boat (I know kayakers like these).

There are also some less expensive black and white 4″ sonars out there, with a compact 12v ice fishing battery, the whole thing will weigh in around 3-4 lbs.

Work pretty good but have issues with algae or cloudy water. Got one when first come out buddy uses his a lot. Great tool for bank fishermen…

Get out early in season and check your spots.

I had one that I used to clip on my line behind my planer boards when they first came out, they didn’t work as well as I hoped but it held bottem well! I sold it with my old boat. Never did cast one…

A better idea would be a RC unit.

A friend brought one of these on a bwca trip a few years back. Wasn’t worthless but didn’t work near as well as the marketing suggested. He didn’t bring it along for the following year’s trip if that’s an indication.

Had another friend bring an old portable unit and set the transducer on the floor. I wasn’t with but he said it worked decent. Not a castable solution like you’re looking for but maybe a better option. I’m going to try my FL-8 on trips without portages this year to see how it goes.
