Coon Rapids Dam

Anyone ever shorefish for kitties above/below the Coon Rapids dam? I’m going nuts with this terrible weather, and since I’m not quite willing to risk hypothermia in the kayak, I need to go somewhere this after noon (especially being stuck in Iowa on the Mississippi all weekend for a funeral and not being able to fish!)

It is really shallow below the dam. In fact, it stays pretty shallow all the way down to the 694 bridge. Not saying there aren’t cats in there, but sort of hard to find. You might have some luck drifting through the islands in that area though.

used to fish for them where the rice creek dumps into the mississippi in fridley. Cut bait in the spring and they would slam the baits. If they didnt bite the suckers always would.

You’d be amazed what it looks like this year. We went down there on Easter and she was running pretty shallow.

I thought there was a nice deep hole just down from the dam?

Yeah, the few times I have been down there this year, the creek was so shallow that you could see the bottom pretty much the whole way up to the little dam. No fish swimming in there either. It is also a pretty long cast from the confluence to hit any depth in that area.

Jaokb – are you referring to the raging pool at the base of the dam? Lots of people fish there, but it is really snggy in there.

I’ve ran up there twice this year from 694 but i haven’t fished that streach at all yet this spring. Last summer i tried a few times for cats. I didn’t find any with any size but i didn’t try very hard and i haven’t spent much time kittie fishing. Once i get my new boat rigged i plan on heading out and seeing if there are any holes below the dam to try.

Wow, I am impressed. I don’t think I have ever seen a boat upstream from 610.

I tried to go upstream from that launch on the Brooklyn Park side last year, hit a rock bar and spun my prop. I am no longer that adventurous.

I did in the early ’80’s.

But at some point I heard this terrible sound and it wasn’t too long after that the oars came out while he headed down stream.

If you poke around in your yak out there you should be able to find some holes in the channels through the islands. I found a few in there last summer in the boat.

I used to fish the spillway area on the coon rapids side and caught a good number of cats there fishing for crappies. A ten or twelve pound cat on crappie gear is fun

There are ALOT of channel cats usually in there. We would fish the bp side and cast way the hell out there but close to the swirling water under the dam. Usually as soon as it hit the bottom you would have a cat and some big ones to. Tough part is gettin them up over that wall.

But this year it’s shallow as hell and they don’t have the middle dams open so it’s pretty much possible to fish that area.
    Good luck though.
I would maybe give u some other channel cat spots around there if your name wasn’t Josh eats kitties

So your totally against keeping a few cats? I’m not ripping on you, I’m just curious.

I don’t keep many myself, 4-6 per year tops. Tasty LITTLE guys.

Maybe he is just against keeping cats from his channel cat spots.

Oi! The number of cats I actually harvest a year is fairly low (partially because I don’t eat them that often and also since I only seem to catch them past the eating size, but that might be cause I mostly fish on the Croix)

The SN was partially as a euphemism, and partially since in our area people either think of catfish as rough/junk fish, or they’re purely trophy chasers (nothing wrong with chasing the bigguns!), it seemed the people who ate them were few and far in between in this region.

I appreciate the PM’s I did get, and will be giving a spot a shot tonight, since two people PMed me the exact same location, seems to give it a lot of credibility ; )

No worries though, doubt I’ll dent the population much.. If I were to fish seriously for sustenance, I’d hit the panfish and bass populations.. Not that bass are the best tasting but they’ve been blowing up the last few years, and are still fairly nutritious!
