Sturgeon Line?

I’ve put together a nifty spinning rod/reel for Rainy/LOW sturgeon and I’m looking for some input on line. The rod is a 9′ Woopin’ Stick and the reel is a salt-water-sized (I don’t recall the model) Diawa spinning reel.

    Suggestions?

Disclaimer: I haven’t used the mono yet although I have a spool that I’ll be using it on for the SE.

Jeff Williams the owner of Team Catfish hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Everything he’s told me about the Tug O War braid has been true. Frays less then other braids, keeps it’s color an the 80 pound line I’ve been using for cats and sturgeon is as tough as nails.

If you’re using your rod for sturgeon only and not fishing in snaggy areas, 30 pound Tug O War braid will work very well for you.

For the mono, I went with the 20 pound Electric Lime. All I can say right now is that it looks good on the spool, but I hope to get some water time with it prior to the Sturgeon Excursion.

Combining the 3/0 Double Action Team Catfish Hooks with their line and sinkers will set you up for success come sturgeon fishing time!

65# power pro here. Plenty strong but still a decent diameter to cut threw the water. Have tried 80# but notice I need to bump up the sinker weight.

We used 65lb Power Pro on the Croix last fall and I felt that could handle anything the river could throw at us. We did have one big fish break off though, on the prop

I run 80lb power pro and dont mind a bit biggger sinker. And when I river fish in very harsh rocky water I just use a bit weaker of a hook so my line doesn’t break, but my hook straightens out… Cheaper then new sinkers and swivels

I used to use 20# mono for years with great results. I switched to 40# power pro for the factor of cutting through the water and the more sensitive and no stretch capabilities with less diameter(helps with those light bites). The added strength and less vulnerabilities to uv light an added benefit. I do not use a leader as I feel sturgeon rely on movement and smell above all else, an opportunistic feeder.
