When I was catching trophy flathead and posting
pictures, other guys would challenge me. They
said I had lots of experience but if I were good
I could help less experienced anglers to catch flathead.

I often take new flathead fishermen out and help them with
    big cats.

I look forward to future challenges.

Nice flatheads mr katfish. Looks like your passing down the passion to your youngsters and you can tell by the smiles on their faces they love fishing for the beasts too.

About 12 years ago, Kayla actually caught a flat almost 1 1/2 times her weight. She weighed a whopping 38 pounds.

In mornings when I reeled up lines I often had channel cats that picked up baits.

When I noticed one moved from the spot I set it out I would “assign” Kayla to reel in that rod. She really loved bringing in the channel cats.

One morning I handed her a rod and when she hit the end of the slack I saw everything heading for the deep six and grabbed her.

At first she refused to let me help but soon realized she couldn’t reel the fish in with one hand and reluctantly let me hold the rod while she reeled with both hands. The result was a 52 pound flathead.

I told Doug Stange about it and during winter we

went to an outdoor show. Kayla won a casting kids competition and Stange gave her a prize and announced he knew she was a great catfisherman.

A few months later he put a little blurb in In Fisherman for her.

Moose the kids love the fish.

One trick is to make sure the flathead don’t freak out and scare the kids.

And never let the kids see you bleed

Its ok to show them, builds character. Just don’t tell them it hurts.
