Will be up in Baudette at the end of March and am looking for a reputable sturgeon guide for a couple of days. Can’t seem to find anybody aside from the resorts which isn’t necessary what I am interested in. Will be up there starting March 25th and ready to fish by the 27th. Also anybody have an average weight on a 50″ fish on the Rainy?

The end of March might be pushing it as far as ice out on the Rainy to fish sturgeon. Might be ok this year but you might be better waiting until April.

    Hi Fred, Welcome to Ido!

Kat is correct. Unless you don’t have a boat or the gear, a guide isn’t needed.

Tom Briggs at Wigwam Resort is a very good sturgeon guide. I think he was guiding when I was born! LOL!

Hire Tim Anderson bigfishhunt.com He does well every year up there and can probably work out a combo walleye trip for you during that time frame. He’s a great musky guide too. What kind of guide says “you don’t need a guide”? My buddy says catchin cats on P3 is a no brainer too, don’t hire a guide

Seriously, look up Tim Anderson you won’t be disappointed.

Although I don’t personally guide for Sturgeon a buddy of mine who is a licensed guide would be a great choice. It may also allow you to fish big Sturgeon away from the mass of anglers. Of course biased as a guide…..I believe it would still be worthy of hiring one. Heck I may jump in the boat with ya!! Shoot me a PM if you like and I’ll help facilitate. BTW you DON’T have to fish LOTW mouth to catch big Sturgeon………Just don’t tell the Zoo down there.

    Thanks Stuart.

I’m not trying to take money away from guides up there.

Every year for the last 5, I’ve had calls or emails to guide for the Sturgeon Excursion. I’ve told them all the same thing. If you don’t have the equipment or a boat, I’ll give you some leads on local guides. Otherwise, with a very small investment in tackle, you’ll save some money and have a good time.

This is not night fishing and there’s been many people that have caught big sturgeon just a couple hundred feet from the Wheelers point launch. The old river bed that runs from Wheelers point on at the mouth of the Rainy River towards the Gap is where hundreds of people fish each year. We’re talking 1/10 of a mile to three miles of very productive sturgeon fishing as these fish move up the Rainy.

I would suggest looking at the number of posts a persons made in considering their recommendations. Typically the people with higher post counts have more invested in a site and try to give the best info possible.

With that said either way you go, guide or guideless please do stop back and tell us how you did. We like pictures too!

Hiring a guide is the best money a person can spend when unfamiliar with an area or specie. I don’t care how easy it is to catch them. The first guy isn’t asking how to catch them but for a guide recommendation. You welcome someone with 1 post with open arms, but rag on the guy with 10 posts.

EFF U and your post count. Tim Anderson is a stand up guy.

Another thing to watch for is people trying to take your money when others are trying to help you out with information.

I do not know Mr. Anderson or his ability.

Or, you could whore your sponsor products and pretend you are being helpful. sheesh, I thought I’d sign up here and talk about Musky fishing a bit after I saw a TV program with the same name. Don’t question the man who is a walking billboard here I guess though. Give a guy an honest answer about a quality guide and get ragged on about post count. Nice site here.

Certainly do promote questions. I’m sorry if you don’t like the answers.

Ask any question and there will be many many types of answers. It’s up to the OP to decide what’s right for him.

It is a nice site here.
The poster asked a question. You gave your opinion. BrianK offered his opinion. It should have ended at that. But it didn’t. The poster has options for a guide, but also knows he doesn’t necessarily need one. I for one like seeing both sides.

If you have a ax to grind, well grind away. Just understand the site was good with you and will continue to be good should you choose to leave.

For what it’s worth I often get on the wrong side of a issue also. Right Trev?

I’d say welcome, but maybe you are gone already?

Hire a guide for sturgeon fishing? Went for the first time last spring on the Rainy for sturgeon, due to slower walleye fishing, dunked some crawlers for some sturgeon on the muskie gear. Went out of Frontier landing to the east to the first deeper hole mid river idling slowly until i spotted the “telephone poles” near bottom on the electronics. Anchored upstream and casted the front side of the hole. Within 1 hour we missed a couple and boated a 68″+. Save the money for another trip or some extra gear imho. Heavy braid with 4 oz no rolls sinkers with bigger circle hooks worked for us.
