Thanks Brent. Maybe for those who are skeptical, this proves it was a 25 1/8 Bass.

I think your 25.75 fish would make a great avatar, if you weren’t in the picture.

I think it is great in the first picture of your 26 1/8″ bass the look on your face shows how disgusted you are just holding it

We need more catfish pictures and less bass pictures in this thread

You wouldn’t think a guy holding a 26 3/8″ bass would have the stink face, would you. And that was before I got into cats, when I was a Jr Bassmaster.

    Pug,

Shore fishing and all, it would be difficult to get a fish like that. What were you using to get that 26-7/8″ fish? I have my bets on some sort of Rapala or a spinnerbait, but as previously noted, I prefer my bass flying through the air in an effort to get them away from my boat before they stink the whole thing up.

And now back to your regularly scheduled program…..

When I first met Pug, his brother was teaching him what a rapala was. A bass like his at 27.5 inches more likely came from a Mepps Spinner of some type. They don’t have to be tuned.

Funny you guys should ask and make guess so far off on what it takes to land a 27.75″ bass from Calhoun from shore.

My nephew and I worked the shoreline all day with nothing to show. We went back to the dock and I dropped a purple texas rigged worn down next to the wood piling holding the dock up (this was back when the city had wood legs on the docks). She didn’t put up much of a fight, as you can see by her belly she was spawned out and resting when I caught her.

When I was a kid I fished with a purple tx rigged worm for pike. Used a black jig head, but never caught anything close to your 28 1/8 pounder.

Don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of ways to catch a 28 4/8″ bass and one certainly has to be lucky as they are good. I hope some day I break the 28 6/8″ PB I set for myself.

Pug – How many hunks of cut bait did you get out of your 28 5/8 inch bass?

Steve, it was 29 5/8″, not that I am counting, and it killed my tomato plants. I know no channel cat will touch bass flesh, but how was I to know it was as good as Roundup as a fertilizer. Even the cat stopped sneaking outside when I buried it.

Nearly impossible to tell the actual weight and size from a photo to begin with..

I’d like to know how tall that guy is in the main forum he looks pretty darn big so if he’s 6’6″ or better that fish could be pushing 60 whether the experts want to believe it or not I don’t care.

Plus the Griz would never lie about his catches…

I agree. She absolutely would have been over 12lbs. pre-spawn.

For what its worth to anyone, I only worry about wether or not its big enough to eat. I dont care about trophys or impressing nobody. I like eating fresh fish and nothing tastes better than cat when its breaded and deep fried!

I worry if they are too big too eat. Selective harvest.

Your 13lb bass was NOT too big too eat. You just have to cut the fillets into smaller pieces.

Lots of pieces on a 13-1/2 lb bass.

If we set the expectation that the weights and measurements accompanying pics should be accurate, does that mean I have to go back and edit all of my posts? I thought that was all part and parcel of a good fish tale!!!

Seriously , I figure anglers are just giving their best estimates most of the time, and don’t take it too seriously. Nothing wrong with sharing an observation “think that looks more like a 20”, as long as you’re not being too personal or critical about it…

Pug – When Tim said your 30″ Bass weighed in at 13 1/2 lbs I knew he had to be way off in his estimate. I went to my friend, Google, and found this Texas weight/length chart which claims a 29 7/8 inch bass weighs in at a hefty 17 1/2 lbs. Pug – I don’t think you know it but you set a new MN Largemouth Bass state record. The old record was 8 lb 15 oz and you blew it right out of the water. You need to submit that critter right away – all your friends here at IDO will vouch for you as character witnesses. I know they all can qualify as characters but I’m not sure of their credentials as witnesses. Go for it, Buddy!

Who knew a 35″ bass could generate such a long thread.

I am shocked at the opposition to giving an guess on a length of a fish. I didn’t really see it as a big deal.

I know you guys are opposed, but will you promise to please let me know if my numbers ever seem off on a picture I post? I appreciate and value your opinions and you won’t hurt my feelings.

I’d say correct them. Facts are facts..and hyperbole helps no one.

It might make that one person feel “good”, but what about the people that legitimately catch a fish of that size.. Doesn’t the 30 other people that inflated their 40 to a 50 detract from the guy that actually caught a 50 and honestly reported it?

In order for him to get the recognition he’d deserve for such a nice catch, he’d be compelled now to blow it up to 55 or so on.

Eventually numbers become meaningless because it becomes almost mandatory to talk out of your arse just to compete.

That’s why I only fish for me.

I understand the culture, especially in the past, is about bragging, showing off and trying to catch a fish bigger than everyone else. But if measuring yourself and other people’s catches against each other is the ultimate reason you are correcting someone’s weights, it comes off as sweet lemons.

I agree. There’s a difference between boasting a fictional weight, and taking a reasonable guess. I catch so many trout/salmon here on lake MI, that I can get very close by just seeing the fish in person. I’ll be honest that I have a hard time with cats. I tend to under estimate and am pleasantly surprised when I put one on the scale.

Here’s a pic that I got a few pms on last year. Feel free to critisize and take a guess. FYI, the guy that is holding it is about 6′-3″ ( I wasn’t about to ask him his weight).

I think thats the best way to fish, for you. I figure if you get to worrying about weights and lengths to much, than you are just adding stress to whats supposed to be a relaxing time. just my philosophy.

Oh I agree it shouldn’t be a c*ck competition, where you cut down others just to inflate your own (living relatively is a terrible thing) but two things that people should never compromise on is truth and honesty.

A newbie is probably never even going to be close in guessing weight, so if s/he didn’t scale it, correcting them can help hone in their guestimates (I know I couldn’t guess a fishes weight if my life depended on it hence why the kayak has a scale in it now)

And if they are someone that has seen enough cats in their day that they could guess they weight by its’ taste.. well then they’re just lying.. Either scenario I think the truth/honesty wins.

However, if someones correction comes in the form of “OMG R U STOOPID?! THAT FISH IS 10 LBS LESS AT LEAST” then, yeah…that’s unnecessary.

I think photos can be so deceiving it is hard to tell actual size with out more information. Here are two pics of two bass that measured almost exactly the same. I would not of guessed that by the pics. Needless to say my brother is larger then I am.
