Brian, you just cannot photoshop Podunk, Iowa.
Heck, they can’t even come up with the gps #s so I’ll stick with 6ft under.
Most all the fishing photos in my possession were taken by others-of others. Photos should be for remembering, not disputing.

For the most part I don’t care, I might think he’s a bit mislead, but it’s no worse than them people that take pictures of crappies or whatever that with the right camera position look like they are 4 foot long.

This is not a catfish only thread. It happens in all species.

That has a nice ring to it Herb…and if you say it’s 6 feet, I’m not going to argue.

Overestimation will get you nowhere with this crowd.

It is a slippery slope. There are some guys who post only to have people tell them how great they are. [Cough]Pug{Cough]
These guys normally don’t post unless they put on a show and killed the fish. The look at the size of my “fish” guys.

Then there are guys who are here for the camaraderie and to learn more about the species they prefer. To understand the species and to better target them is all they want to do. Reading DNR reports, data on seasonal movements, dreaming of big fish, and putting their time in. These are the guys who have no problem with someone correcting their weights because they are here to learn.

IMHO, figure out which type of person you are talking to. If they are the first type, congratulations on a great fish

If they are the second type, correct away.

I doubt my opinion counts much but here is my 2 cents worth.

If the person is clearly a novice and catches a monster, let him call it what he wants. If the person is a self professed expert then hold him to the coals and question his weight / measurement.

I guess a person could politely ask if it was weighed or a estimated weight. Did you measure the girth or just guessing. Did you have a tape measure or how did you conclude that Muskie was 58″.

Easy questions to ask without really calling the person out.
Personally, I don’t care. If the guy thinks it’s a 20lb. Walleye that’s fine with me.

Oops, you got 3 cents worth.

I once made fun of Bret’s estimations and he hasn’t talked to me in years.

Problem is, no one ever says how great I am. Jerks.

I should clarify my reply. I guess it is kind of a case-by-case basis. And I don’t think you should do it just to call someone out or try and have your little gotcha moment.

There are some guys who obviously exaggerate for attention *cough* Farmboy *cough*. For them, let them keep fooling themselves. Let those guy’s golden nostril nuggets shine.

I’ve sent both Pug and Farmboy pm’s telling them they’re full of BS when it comes to the weights they’ve claimed.

Sometimes that’s worked better then posting it publicly…as I just did.

That one gets me too. I’ve had people tell me they “limited out on 10 inch gills yesterday”. The biggest I’ve ever caught is 9 1/2 and when photoed next to an 8 inch, it was just amazing.

Let the person live the moment! To many people get ripped on then stop posting anything. Some sketchy weights to nice photos and reports is better then nothing at all… We all may know but dont need to say it!

Case by case basis. As in fishing things are usually not black and white.

That being said the individual posting shouldn’t speculate size if they don’t have a good idea of what they are talking about and perhaps ask for guesses or estimates.

I will say this also, overestimating the size of fish is problematic in the fact that it can give novice anglers a false sense of reality.

It’s amazing how many 70 fish are caught in bars.

There there’s always the question of how much does a 50 or 60 pound flathead fluctuate in a 24-48 hour period?

I read someplace over the years a flat will eat 1/3 it’s body weight in a 24 hour period.

50 pound fish, that would be 16.5 pounds. Now it’s 66.5 pounds? In looking at the belly of known 50 pounders, 10 pounds of Pugs bass would easily fit in one. (If it didn’t spit it up first.)

    All of the Above!!!
I learned a lesson when I started guiding…bought a pretty accurate scale…Didn’t take long to figure out clients did NOT want to know the (guesstimate)”5 lb” Bass they had been catching for years were only 2-3 lbs
Now when I am fishing with friends for fun (and friendly competition )or one of us boats a Piggy, The Rapala Digital comes out immediately…especially on P-4…some of us are damn anal on length/girth/weight of big Walleyes! Me included…

Brian, here’s my take on these guess weights…. Unless you have a certified (Chantillion) or equivelent scale, most of the guys are only guessing. At the Walleyes Unlimited Club I belong to if you are registering a fish for the monthly/yearly contests they MUST be weighed on a chantillion scale that is calibrated every year. No execeptions…Guessing doesn’t cut it !!!

    Who cares.

It happens with Muskys all the time. Mostly with inches though. If the person who posted the picture doesn’t care, then why include it in the description. If I caught something I have no clue what it weighed and only
guessed, I’d love for someone better to give me their opinion. When someone goes on WWW and posts a musky and says 50-60 pounds or a walleye and says 15-20lbs or a bass and says 8-16lbs it’s going to get beat to death….every single time and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it.

I guess I am seeing things in a different context. Usually I see people giving guesstimates on posted pictures because people are guessing themselves, but then asking for confirmation.

Personally the most off of people that fish are carp guys. I’ve bowfished a ton of carp. They aren’t heavy. I love those euro types saying 20 when I know 8 is more like it. I don’t fish for weight or length anyway.
You see pix of new Illinois record walleye? Wasn’t any doubt on that…

You don’t fish for weight or length? Sure, I’d fish even if every fish was the exact same size, because I find fishing enjoyable period. But still, every time out my ultimate goal is either a ton of fish or my personal best for a species. That just adds to the excitement on what as enjoyable hobby.

That being said, I don’t fish for other people. In other words, my main goal is not to catch a fish so I can brag to friends or run to post a picture, despite what Farmboy thinks.

    The truth hurts.

See I have always been a Wild fan. Got rid of the ugly glasses. Don’t wear any accessories anymore. No wonder I had a hard time dating back then. Who am I kidding, it wasn’t and isn’t just the clothes.

On a side note, I’d hang out with Stacy and Clinton any time. I think Stacy London is hot. And Clinton seems like a fun guy to hang around who would respect your heterosexuality. P
