Just finished up on the 4 rods to have the cork handles sealed.

Scrub the dirt and sucker scales off, dry, seal, dry and out to the rod rack they go!

Skeeter Boat Center next Saturday to see if I can win one of the 4k in prizes, then the following Saturday crappie fishing at the St Croix G2G…will it be April by then?

Are those “refinished”? What is your process for that, Ive got a few cork handles that are lookin kind of grimey.

Lightly sand the cork with a scotchbrite or 360 sand paper, wipe the dust off with a damp paper towel, dry, brush on (I use a paper towel) the U-40, dry and that’s it.

    Stuff claims to:
    Enhance the cork feel
    Toughens the cork
Reduces chipping and degradation of cork ect
    Seals against dirt and oils

Seems like it lasts about 3 seasons in my boat.

BK – who’s your local guy that you trust with routine stuff on the Abus? I clean the worm gear every year, but would like a real thorough check every couple years. Plus I have a buddy with a ‘broken’ 6500.

As much business this guy gets he should be a sponsor here! LOL!

John’s a great guy and is very reasonable to the point of it doesn’t pay for me to clean my own reels.

    Anyway…

Just give him a ring and he’ll give you a price over the phone.

    Brian-

U40 sealant? What is it…? It is that, or start painting the hallways, so help a guy out with an excuse.

Anything to help a fella angler get out of painting hallways! LOL!

http://www.u-40.com I would think most rod building stores would have it. I got my bottle from an old friend that was running a very successful bait/tackle shop at a resort.

I sent a message to your FW, and let her know that that;u-40, also works well on sealing kitchen and bathroom floors.

My FW went to high school with that guy. Are you saying my FW is old?

Are these said rods for use at the Sturgeon excursion?

U-40 can be bought at many rod building component supplier.

Since Brian brought it up, I thought id mention that you should save some of those shavings from sanding your cork.

    Why you ask???

If you ever have a chunk of cork missing of a gouge in it you can mix some wood glue with the shavings you have from sanding or chunks of cork from a wine cork. Glue them to your cork handle and allow it to dry and then sand it smooth and see ask BK suggested. Cork repair 101

I’ve done this several times with wine corks. It works awesome! I have a jar full of cork shavings should the need arise.

But if I show the damage to my wife, I can go get a new rod because that one is so old and damaged to make is no longer useable.
