Taking a break-Dec Cats

Jesse the Krooked Catfisherman and I took a break from capturing some underwater video yesterday to get a little fishing in.

We caught some saugers by vertical jigging and trolling cranks, but the unique catches came while using Team Catfish Fiber Bait.

We anchored in a catfishy location that Jesse found and dropped our baits down within 2 feet of the bottom. With the wind, the back end off the boat would go shallow and then deep. On the second swing shallow, my rig hooked up on a rock but when I yanked on the line, both the rod and I stared to head toward the side of the boat. I struggled to loosen the drag.

I hollered to Jesse that “I had the state record walleye caught on stink bait!!” I’m sure the wintering flathead crushed the stink bait but when I set the hook, it came out of it’s mouth and lodged in it’s tail.

Not to be out done, Jesse brought in a channel cat. Now the fish wasn’t a big deal, but Jesse couldn’t just hook it the regualar way. The cat was caught on someone’s “little joe” style spinner rig and Jesse hooked the LOOP end of the rig.

    Precision fishing at it’s best!

What a great day weather wise to be on the river! If it wouldn’t have been for the wind it would have been sweatshirt and blue jean weather!

Jesse, notice my watch was on my arm?

Lost my watch sometime between the time this picture was taken and when I was washing my hands after we came in.

You could walk on that pile of shad. Sometimes in the summer when Im wading in the sippi for smallmouth the shad will pile around your legs and nibble on your legs. It’s an awesome feeling

It must have been a good year for shad. I’ve seen a bunch of pictures and heard many a report about massive clouds of shad. I suppose a swollen river for most of the season meant they could stay away from prey easier and find more food.
