Allen W and I drop anchor.
6:30 pm
The Lowrance is marking big fish on the bottom. It looked good.
Bait today was live suckers in the 10 inch range (they were the smallest Four Seasons in Red Wing had) and smaller walleye style suckers for cut bait.
We spend about an hour trying to entice a flathead into a bite, but couldn’t do it. Wrong spot? Too big of bait? Either way, we cut our losses and moved for some channel cat action.
Our rods were rigged with 3/0 Team Catfish Double Action hooks tipped with a 1 to 2 inch long slice of sucker fillet or head. An 8 to 10 inch leader made from the same as our main line which happened to be Team Catfish’s 80 pound Tug O War Nuclear Yellow braided line. A 2/0 swivel and a 4 oz No Roll Sinker from http://www.CheapSinkers.com
Over kill for channel cats? Yeah, but this is the river. You’ll never know what’s going to be on the end of your line each time a bite is detected!
I lost count of the channels Allen hooked into. But the bites and fish kept us busy! We didn’t get into any “monster” fish, but the ones Allen did land made him grunt and of course my now famous question “who’s in control?” always puts a smile on a persons face when the rods bent down into the water.
Thanks for the fun night Allen!
(notice I didn’t mention anything about the girly cast or you jumping up every time the live sucker wiggled the rod tip??)
All fish were caught, ID’ed, some were measured, some were photoed and all were released for you and your off spring to catch another day.
