Welcome to IDO! Can you tell us more as to where you’ll be fishing on the Mississippi and which species you prefer to target? Lot’s of helpful people in the cat forums

I’ve got some bad news for you. There are no blues this far north. For Flatheads you are going to need to find some bullheads or use suckers from the bait shop. Fish wood, deep holes, and current breaks. Fish bite best after dark.

    What Kev said.

If you are fishing for flats, you are probably done for the year. Maybe a rogue or two can still be had. You could still manage some channels this time of year. Use fresh cut suckers and target some current seams.

There are still sturgeon to be caught for the next few weeks on the croix if you are looking for big fish.

    What Kev and Fresh said.

With the temps dropping the flats are moving toward their wintering holes.
I don’t target flats this time of the year, but with the dropping water temps, I would fish the Hastings dam area on the North side (opposite of the area you launched at).

Other areas would be the back sides of wing dams and there’s a number of them between Hastings and Prescott. Another place would be any wood found along that stretch.

The bait shop in Prescott might have some usable suckers, but I know that Four Seasons in Red Wing has them for sure. I would be surprised if the bait shop in Hastings has any…but worth a call.

I going out on a limb here, but I would say anyone around here that calls themselves a cat fisherman won’t target flats once the water temp hits 50 degrees or less.

    Channel cats? Much different story.

Let us know how you do.

But if you ever have a hankering to use a skateboard as bait, it’s the place to go.

Don’t mean to be a downer but if you were fishing with bluegill heads at the Hastings dam you were illegal. You can not use blue gill for bait in Minnesota. I know—it doesn’t make sense but welcome to the state of 10,000 laws

Maybe he has a WI license from a vacation before he moved to Hastings?

For real, if you just moved here from a few states South, make sure you read the MNDNR regs as they tend to be a lot more restrictive!

i would highly suggest deleting that post immediately. you just admitted to breaking the law on a public forum. and yes, the DNR watch these sites all of the time!

Dam at Hastings is not border waters—it is inland Minnesota so license doesn’t matter.

I recall a young lad that posted some photo’s of an owl. Claimed he was using it for crow bait.

After many calls from IDO members to the DNR, it turns out he found the owl and had the DNR’s permission to bring it to the DNR office.

He just couldn’t resist posting a spin on the story.

Not saying one way or the other, but without pictures, it’s just a fishing story.

I know what you’re saying, but i know personally of 3 people who have had run in’s with the DNR over stuff posted online.

    1. person posted a picture of a 3 man limit of ducks, 2 people were in the picture. someone called TIP on him, wardens contacted the website admin, got info, tracked the guy down, visited him. (3rd guy was taking the photo!!)

    2. another person, same forum, same year, posted up a “story” of a huge shoot of birds. DNR showed up at his doorstep to “inspect”. ended up being nothing.

    3. this whole debacle was started, due to a post on an internet forum….

also, i have personally been told by a warden that they monitor these forums very closely, and will act on things posted online.

are they monitoring every single thread? no. but who’s to say that one doesn’t happen to stumble onto this thread, and then they find out who the poster is. and hassle him everytime, thinking he is probably breaking the law, and its only a matter of time before they catch him.

all i’m saying, is to be very careful about what you put on a public website, as you never know who is watching…

Yes they do look at the forums for sure.

How else are they going to learn how to catch a fish?

I’m somewhere around 30+K posts, many with photo’s and I can say honestly that I’ve been checked by polite CO’s for license ect a number of times, but those were routine stops.

There are some that are CO magnets…I think.

Sorry for taking your question post a very different way Flatheadman. We’ll get back on track here shortly.

Is this why the thread on paddlefish recipes keeps getting deleted?
