Out last night…

Well, technically it’s last night now – a few hours ago. Had a blast catching large perch during our baitfishing excursion, then threw some cranks for walleyes and landed a perfect pickling pike – 7 pounds.

Cats were slow but present, with a 6 and an 11 pounder to start out the night (11 pounder in yellow below). Then my nephew’s buddy had a hit that was most definitely a fish of a different class. Very slow and deliberate and at the hookset it was obviously big. Too bad he didn’t keep it on, because his personal best was 22 and I guarantee he had that beat.

Slow for awhile then my own rig got a hit, but it came straight at me so it took my awhile to figure out what was going on – finally got to where I felt it drop and slam the bluegill again and I set the hook into a very solid mass of fish. Been awhile for me, that slow, lumbering fight with lots of raw power at the end was exciting!

When it finally came in, we guessed 50 pounds and it came in at 49.

Rounded out the night with a 12 pound channel cat brought in by Ben then had to leave as the rain was coming and we were half thinking we’d have to row home…

Fantastic flathead! I’ve kind of ended my season to pursue some fall run salmon on Lake Michigan, but pictures of fish like that always make me wish I hadn’t. Awesome!

This one was always one of my favorites for that reason too – was by myself so it took me several shots to get the whole fish in one shot, but in this one his head and back look monstrous…

Fighting, landing and trying to take a photo of a 50 will pretty much make a person sit down for a while!

    Good pic Matt!

Just digging that pic up made me realize that I caught that one on September 24th – I should be out on the water right now!
