Cookie cutter double

This has been a great year for catfishing around Madison. I had my buddy Clark out this past weekend. Clark hasn’t had much luck this year fishing. I swear to god he is a wind magnet. I’ve had him out a few times and he just hadn’t connected. He seems to like to break my 30lb leaders with a good fish on. He has done it 3 times this year to my one. He is a bass fisherman in general so they set the hook with that wimpy gear and well it costs them anyway I digress. We setup in a good spot and went a few hours without a bite hanging cut sucker laced with XXX shad jelli. So we moved to a new spot and found a fish right away before we get a second rod out we have a nice 29 in the boat. We repositioned the boat and Clark’s luck changed right away by getting the double (31×18 and 32×20) below without even losing a rod although that was nearly the case on both fish. Doubles are fun but problematic when you can’t control the fish and you’ve got 4 other lines and two anchor ropes to deal with. We managed and Clark went home smiling this time. The tuna boats have left the building and fishing a calm lake is different than normal.

    tight lines

September can really be fun around here for cats especially if the weather holds.

Sounds like a good night on the water Kevin. Some bass guys wouldn’t even consider going after cats. Clark must be a more rounded fisherman. I haven’t been out on Mendota since last Wed. evening. We got three that night and had a great time. No wind and about half moon – beautiful. I went out on Lake Monona Saturday afternoon – evening and got a mess of nice sized bluegills and one walleye- got it to the boat but my friend missed it with the net and it got away.

    10-4 on the doubles!

They’re a blast! Although being alone isn’t the best time either. I’m getting old I guess.

However, looks like a good time Kev! Keep that up and you’ll need another Floating Fish Grip!

Another good night Kevin. I think Jerry is right…you really know the lake and the fish. I’ll have to make one more trip up there this fall just to try again. I think Jerry is learning and has a handle (short stick maybe) on the technique but we’ll keep pluggin’ away and someday we might be as sucessful as you.

I can remember the trip I made last May with Jerry. There were many doubles, a few triples and I think at one time we may have had a quad going off in the boat. It sure can get confusing…but fun.

Good fishing. Maybe I’ll see you yet.

Naw I’m just a pitch and chuck weekender. Jerry cleaned my clock this spring. I have lots of slow nights. Don’t be afraid to try new spots. A move of 400 yards was the difference between getting skunked and having 7 fish.
