Spoke with the Washington Co Sheriff last evening

We had a chat about the craze’s flying through the anchored boats sturgeon fishing near Bayport.

They said they were on the water at least until 11 pm on weekends and monitor ch 16. They also recommended calling 911, stating it’s not an emergency and giving a boat description, registration number and the direction of travel if they come within 150 feet of your anchored boat.

They also suggested that many larger boats have names on the back transom that’s easier to read than registration numbers. That will work too.

I asked if they have an opportunity, if they would park there one a weekend evening for a while. With a few large, big engine vessels seeing the flashing blue lights…word should spread fast.

In my opinion that sounds a lot better than throwing beer bottles at people

it would be for you since you throw like a girl and would just end up breaking it in your own boat.

    Great work BK

Cause throwing beer bottles “empty or full” would be alcohol abuse.

Why wouldn’t one want to discharge a flare gun to identify your location to on-coming traffic?

Nah I’d only do that in your boat

In the direction of the oncoming boat

‘spose a person could make a case for “immanent bodily harm or death” and direct a laser at the on coming craft.

But I would rather continue fishing…too much paper work.

What about peppering them with Multi-colored Paintballs.

Be easy for the Sheriff to identify them. You could also try dragging a casting length rope. (100′ of old nylon rope, attached to 20# superline). Floated across their path would shut them down when its wrapped tightly around their prop. Maybe not the best or even legal idea, but slow them down.

I’ve seen the same issue with some Ski & Wake Boats. I am sure they think enough harassment and the fishing boats will leave.

“imminent bodily harm” will only come into play if YOU attach YOUR laser to the same thing I’ll be attaching MY laser to…
(hehehehe, no not really, just thinking…)

    Good work BK…

I would LOVE to see a water patrol sit there one weekend night! Unfortunately, I’m guessing that this past weekend was the peak of it, and with the big cool down on the way there won’t be a ton of traffic out there anymore. BUT, please pursue this, it can only help and the anchored boats sure aren’t getting any less as the years pass.

And YES it’s a MUCH better idea than throwing things. But, before you go dismissing that idea, put yourself in that position a dozen times, it does tend to wear on a guy after several years and heaven forbid that we joke about it a little bit huh? LOL

As far as the flare thing goes. John went out and bought a SUPER bright LED flashing orange light for his boat specifically for sturgeon fishing. This thing is a BEACON (there is no way to miss it) and it matters less. All it does is give the boats an opportunity to identify their path and not slow down. Which is fine for us, but not so much for the guy anchored next to us.

So answer me this. If boats are anchored 50ft apart across the channel from shore to shore, who is causing the problem? The fishermen or the Tuna boats? I think we as fishermen need to also be a little smarter in where we anchor to fish. If there is one obvious path of travel, you are only asking for trouble by anchoring there, not only did you now cause trouble for yourself but also all the other boats as the boats passing through will now have to find another hole… plus that WHOLE area is pretty much identical anyways in regards to fishing structure, just line up with another boat upstream or down and keep the path open.

I’m just glad the cool down is coming and spots other than the one in question will be producing fish too. A LOT less boat traffic there.

Certainly not to be argumentative as we are on the same side…but in the night of question, the furthest outside boat was not to the half way mark of the river. Over a quarter of the way I’m guessing.

I was anchored directly up stream of you…hoping that River Pro had enough metal to protect me from a down stream attack.

After you left a boat slid over on the WI side. Which made it about 75% covered. I still think we as fishermen can do our part as well.

I say you guys form a pact and hold a 100′ section of rope between each of your boats.

I personally think that those tuna boat operators need to be educated. If they have a big boat and a slip on the Croix they need boater education class. The problem is they just don’t know any better cause they never cared to learn the rules.

What BK didn’t say is that he was chatting with the Deputy while he was in the back seat. I heard something about stink bait and a sheep?

I picture the rope catching and not fouling the props and seeing a couple fishing boats smash together like balls on a pendulum.

I hope not to see this on Sunday. We’ll be out on the Croix for the first time chasing ol’ diamondback sturgeon. If you see a Bass Tracker anchored at the community hole, swing by and say hi.

I don’t care how close a boat comes (as long as he isn’t running over my anchor or my lines) as long as they slow down.

Boats that come flying between anchored vessels during the day don’t scare me too bad……they just irritate me.

Boats that come right at you at night at WOT and don’t even start to turn until you hit them with a spotlight scare the crap out of me. Almost everytime out there it happens at least once where a boat is just flying and has no idea your even there……

I can’t even begin to recap all the close calls because there are just too many to list.

My suggestion is always keep a handheld spotlight within reach. It has saved my butt a couple times. Plus it will make it easier to get the boat numbers that way.

Nice work BK. I hope we see the Sheriff out there.

Hubbard’s MIMI two years ago. Although she wasn’t at WOT…I had my engine running and knife in one hand and spot light in the other before she turned. I don’t think jumping overboard would have helped to be honest.

Just another one of them change your shorts close calls.

I was looking at 12v strobes WWG. I was hoping to find a replacement bulb that had a flash and would fit on the end of my anchor light. (I have two anchor lights- don’t ask why)

    What kind did you buy?

I just got a L.E.D flashing yellow strobe light that plugs into the cig lighter. I got it at northern tool.

Watch everyone be out there over the next few weeks with warning lights and the Cos will tag you guys, not the cruisers, for some goofy rule about using lights other than anchor and navigation lights.

WOT – wide open throttle (anyone with a boat should know that one…..)
MIMI – no friggin idea what that means. I assume from context that it is referring to a specific vessel that came too close.
WWG – wastewaterguru (that would be me!)
