So what will boat traffic be like over there this weekend. Would a person need to bring the paintball gun?

It’s going to be nuts during the day. Bright colored clothing and watching where you anchor is recommended, not to mention always wearing your PFD.

If your planning on fishing a narrows, think of the other vessels that will need to get around you. Not only the tuna boats but the big boys like the Afton Princess ect.

Last year there was a fisherman anchored in the upstream portion of Afton and I watched a commercial cruise ship try to make it over Catfish Bar. I’m sure the Capitan didn’t want to bother the fisherman, but he didn’t make it over the bar and ended up tooting his horn to make it through the channel safely.

At night, keep all navagation lights on and your spotlight handy. Many times when anchoring at night your lights will blend in with the city lights behind you and other boaters may not see you.

It’s up to all on board to watch for other vessels approaching.

Everything I pointed out above is good for all lakes and rivers, however the Croix is a beautiful river and attracts many, many boaters with varying experience levels from all over the area.

Paint ball guns aren’t a bad idea either.

That sounds downright scary! Brian do you think it will thin out after the Labor Day weekend?

What does one order at the Catfish Bar?

Ah I crack myself up sometimes.

Well, what’s thinned out? It won’t be like a holiday weekend but there’s still many many boats that don’t get put away until October.

I’m not trying to scare anyone away. Just take precautions that’s all.
I haven’t ever heard of an anchored fishing boat get hit, but I’ve heard and have witnessed first had boat passing to close to others.

Keep your wits about you and you’ll be good.

Boat wakes and your rocking boat is more of the annoyance this weekend.

True story. We had a friend up at our cabin a few years ago. We were out on the pontoon and decided that we would take a trip over to “the sand bar” to beach the pontoon and do some swimming.

She was concerned because she didn’t bring her ID with

Haha. She’d better hope she’s pretty enough to find a rich husband because I don’t think the Nobel Foundation is going to be paying her much.

As for me, I’m going to wait until mid week to head out. I’m camping/fishing with my brothers this weekend so I won’t be able to join the crowd anyway. I’ve been itching to get out there, but I’ll let you guys deal with the crowd this weekend.

Now look what you’ve started Pug!

True story this year. No names mentioned….

I was going through some safety rules at the start of a guided trip. Told them both about how the Float Techs work, where the throw able device is ect.

Then I said the best thing to do if I would fall out of the boat is to grab the fish net for me to grab on too.

The blond reply was: What good will a net do when your floating down stream?

I’m guessing I would look a bit funny floating down river holding on to a catfish net.

Since then I’ve changed my wording to “use the net to pull me back to the boat.”

You should have told her you’re part Chippewa and as part of the 1823 treaty, you’re allowed to use a ‘drift net’ to harvest fish.

After almost getting tboned for the tenth time john went out and bought a flashing yellow beacon. It helped a lot last year. The tuna boats are probably thinking, now who went and put an island there?

They changed the name to “The Current” so you wouldn’t get confused anymore.

On weekends, I prefer to go out early in the am instead of at night. Start at 4 am and fish into the early morning daylight.

Other way around and you get to deal with the weekend warriors crowd hopping into their boats and booze cruising.

By 4 am most of them have either anchored, beached, or returned to the marina.

Last year, midweek in October I would not have another boat near me other than fellow sturgeon guys. Midweek in October, you can get out around 6 pm, fish until 10 or 11 pm and do quite well.

    Brian,
One of our guest fisherman in the walleye club here in the LaCrosse area pulled this one in on Thursday (last night).
First ever (explain the hold on the fish) and she is still swimming! 50+ inches…no weight, caught on a crawler draggin through a slough, 6lb. test. I think Skip felt like dancing too!!

Wow what a fish. I bet he thought he had hooked into a shark.
