Fellow IDO guy Jerryho joined me for a few hours last night. I managed to get shutout missing my 2 opportunities but Jerry who is a pretty good angler got’er done. Second fish was a 34×20.5 first one a 29×16 which nearly took a rod to Davy Jones locker. I think he ended up with 4 all about that size. The biggest one went on several screaming runs. I thought it was a gigantic fish but only an above average one.

Thanks Kev for taking my brother Jerry out and showing him a few new tricks. He e-mailed me yesterday and was excited that
he was going cat-fishing with Whiskerkev.
Looks like you guys had a pretty good trip.
    Thanks for the pictures

Thanks for the nice comments guys. And thanks to Kevin for taking me out. It was a fun outing. I learned a lot last night about where the channel cats in Lake Mendota hide in the summertime. I told Kevin I’m really good at finding them in the prespawn period of April and May but post spawn has always been a tough time for me. I’ve only been able to get one here or there. Lake Mendota is such a phenomenal cat fishery that I felt really bad that I couldn’t find them in the summertime.
The fishing was slow last night but the fish we got were great ones especially that 16 pounder that fought about as hard as some twenty pounders I’ve caught. And it almost stopped my heart when that first one almost pulled the rod right into the water like Kevin said. I just grabbed it in the nick of time. I’m looking forward to our next trip out together.

Hmmm tonight a north wind dropping off to calm. I know where I’m going to be. Jerry is a pretty interesting guy. He’s fished some water I’ve dreamed about like the James River and has some good stories. I suppose one of these times we’ll need to get Dave over too. Fishing the lake is about current, wind, likely forage areas, and presenting your baits into difficult places. Give me a calm night like tonight anytime.

Yeah, the weather’s looking pretty good for tonight. I’ll be out there too. Don’t know if I’ll have anybody with me though. Wish Dave lived closer.

    Great fish Jerry
Kev sure does know his channels on Mendota and is one of the most focused guys I know…..

Just as long he is not “seeing if you can do it” things….

Job well done Kevin and Jerry. I know Jerry has been looking forward to a trip with Kevin for a long time. Glad it finally happened. Hopefully it won’t be the last.

Kevin, I was up there last weekend with Jerry fishing under that same rainbow that you were. I was out for a little while by myself while Jerry tended to another engagement for a while. Jerry says I fished pretty close to where you had your ‘Best night Ever’…but alas, I couldn’t even raise a nibble. After seeing the bow of your boat in the pictures above, I do remember seeing a Jon Boat going by me as I drifted…might have been you as you just don’t see too many Jon Boats out there on that lake.

Who knows, maybe we’ll all be fishing together some night. I like fishing that lake. It has the best channel catfishing that I know of. And when using cut bait, you just never know what’s gonna take your bait.

Thanks for the great reports guys and good luck next time you go out again.

Thanks Skunkboy and welcome to IDO. I hope we get a chance to fish together on Lake Mendota again this year.

Welcome to the site here Ken, lots of fish talk and lots of fish. Did you do any good on the Cedar here this spring?
