Best night ever

I headed out tonight under a nice rainbow. Two good fish last night and I felt I needed another evening of big cat safari. I took out a couple of dead suckers which the bait shop gave me for free. I set up in Bishops bay which is on a fancy golf course. There was a wedding party going on and plenty of good music all night. I put out a sucker head smeared with smelly jelly XXX shad and had my first fish before I could get my second rod in the water a fat 31×18. Before I could sit down two bobbers went down another on the cutbait and one on sonny’s I set hook and dropped one pole in the rod holder and battled the one in another 31×18. The rod in the holder had a good fish taking drag the whole time took out a good 40 yards of line and a 28 and change finally made it in. It was a harbinder of what was to come. Steady action all night with fish hitting everything I could put out. I setup shallower than last night in 6 feet of water over submergent vegetation and it was a good spot. 27 fish to the net tonight all over 10lbs. They were coming so fast I could hardly get a picture taken. I actually missed two bites while taking self portraits and had two nice fish get off boatside. No giants tonight but you can’t beat nearly 300lbs of hungry channel cats in one trip. If you don’t have a jar of smelly jelly xxx shad you are missing out. For the first time ever cutbait out produced Sonny’s blood.

27 fish over 10 lbs. Man Is that catching catfish Kevin. I can imagine running a floating trotline over the weedbeds, boy would that be fun but a guy don’t have too when catching fish like that with a pole. A bobber does put the bait right infront of thier noses.

When running trot lines down here in shallow water, which I target because its shallow water, Its the first 5 stageings that produce fish the most, the shallow hooks do, not the deep water hooks. Like I’ve said befor I’ve seen big catfish swimming in 6″ of water with thier fins sticking out of the water looking for nightcrawlers, minnows and crawfish that the rising water has brought with it. One time the water was coming up slow and I thought I’d stick my hand down right on the edge of the water along shore. In about 4″ of water I pulled up about a half dozen crawlers everytime I raked my hand over the bottom. The crawlers had been washed out of thier holes and were right on the waters edge. The crawfish and minnows do the same and thats one of the reasons catfish swim shallow sometimes. Catfish come in shallow almost every night in just a few feet of water to feed because thats where thier meal is.

You get 27 fish to the net all over 10lbs in one night and we can’t get you to smile on a single pic. Lighten up, Kevin. You wouldn’t be able to wipe the smile off my face. Nice fish, Kev

Taking my own picture while wrestling a big cat while my camera sits on my front seat is stressful. My next paycheck is cut by around 200 dollars so our distinguished governor can coddle the weathly. I haven’t been in a very good mood lately. I had a good time last night though even if I couldn’t find anyone who would want to join me on such an awesome night. Sometimes I feel all alone in the world. I can’t wait until my kids are old enough to come along but 6 is just too young to be out past bedtime. shortest fish I saw last night was 27 inches. I’m still chasing that fish that will put me in first in the KOTC. I need another 34 or better.

Wow Kev, that is a night to remember. 27 jumbos — makes a guy wonder why anyone would want to go out for walleyes or perch or crappies, if you can get panfish numbers and pike sizes in a channel cat that fights as hard as anything out there!

    Great report. I’m jealous.

I’m not going to start wondering until I see a bucket of Secret 7 or Sudden Impact in the photos.

I’m sold on the fish grips. They are a big help when trying to take a picture of yourself, and also in hook removal.

Couldn’t agree more. They help control the fish and reduce the number of dropped fish and thrashing alligator rolls. We actually busted one of them up at Lockport when a fish tried to roll with it on! Good thing we had a second one along.
