Went out catfishing for the first time ever last night! What a hoot that was! Nothing big, the biggest was 29 inches but for right around home at the local lake they were a lot of fun!

Im thinking a nice walleye rigging rod would make em a lot more fun!

    Yours truly,

What a golden opportunity and right in your area!!

I know many fishermen blast the dnr for stocking channel cats, but as you said…what a hoot!

Congratulations on taking the next step into fish that actually fight. 29 inches is a pretty good fish and would weigh between 10 and 15 lbs.

29″ is a pretty big channel in my book, unless you were talking about flats…

    Got any pics?

BK put a hex on you. He did the same to me. I’ve been trying to catch eyes and all I can catch are channels. And a few nice ones as well. Enjoy there are a hoot and especially if the eyes are being closed mouthed. Cats seem to always be feeing somewhere.

So how are you fishing them in a lake. I know some guys throw out bait on typical bottom rigs and just sit and wait. Others use lighted bobbers under minnows.

Pretty simple stuff I guess. Pretty uninformed on the stuff.

Chicken liver or smelt under a splashbrite. Pitch and wait.

I have no idea what kinda cats we were getting. They werent no bull heads haha.

I got a few pics on the digital I will try and get.

Im pretty impressed with the fish so far. Might have to go south and try for a big one…might have to book bk for an evening.

Channel cats for sure. Put some Sonny’s blood under your splash brights on a dip tube. fish the weeds with your bobber knot up about 3 feet from your rig. If you use Power pro and those bobbers get rid of the brass grommet they come with. They wear through Power pro in two trips.

this is what I use for the channels a 6 6 medium action walleye rod with 20lb power pro. It’s a lot more funner this way I think. I have a problem reeling them in with this combo though when I fish real heavy current like around dams

If you can find a lake after it rains that has runoff coming into it, fish the runoff pitching a jig and minnow. You could also try a more selective bait if that is all you wanted to catch (channels). If there are channel cats in the lake they’re likely to be there hanging around in the current or the seams, along with walleye, and everything else.

Typically we’re talking about larger runoff drains that are filled with rain water and are dumping into the lake. Same goes with lakes that have rivers/creeks feeding them that is impeded by a weir structure.
