Whats the best way to fish skipjack herring? I’ve never really tried it but I have a feeling if I cant get my secret 7 to stick tomorrow I’m going to have to catch a couple jacks and try those. I’ve heard some guys say fillet them and leave the skin on, I’ve heard guys say use just the meat, and I’ve heard guys say cut them directly in half and use the head for a bait and the tail for a bait.

    What do you guys think?

I had a 6lb channel yesterday that puked up a nickel size scale. I doubt they have a prefference.

I’d love to be able to get some Skipjack Herring. Are you catching it on the Mississippi River? How far up towards this way is there a Skipjack bite? How about sending me some.

They are all over the rock/rip rap banks here.. find a bank with minnows and you will see skipjack flipping on the surface, usually along with white bass. Small (tiny actually) bobber, a #8 or #10 hook with a live cricket (bought at pet store) on 4lb line. Set it about a foot deep and let the current take it along, you’ll get them. I used to catch them all the time.

They are best fished right away I’ve heard, but I’ve also seen guys freeze them.

Growing up in Nebraska, I used to use them for channel bait all the time. They are best fresh, but I doubt a hungry channel would turn up his nose at a frozen one. I just chunked ’em up into bloody, stinky 1″ pieces as needed.
