Ok.The wife and I might be going Sturgeon fishing. We have never been. Been mostly pan fishing, with some northern thrown in. HELP!, would be greatly appreciated. Dont want to look like a total newbie. So any thoughts and tips to help me look at least somewhat competent would put me in your debt. (She is not worried ). Wil and Wendy

If I were you I’d just completely forget you even asked that question. This will turn into a dirty habit that has no cure.

    Except more sturgeon.

I’m typing on my phone so I won’t go into any details. Thats what BrianK is for!

I learned slot from this site but learned much more on my own from trial and error. Best thing I can say is to move, move, and move until you find them.

When and where are you going. The season sturgeon opener on the croix is coming up. Heard there can be a good bite on the rainy river in the fall to. Other wise the spring sturgeon excursion is getting closer all the time.

I’m gonna keep an eye on this thread since I plan to do my first sturgeoning this year.

Just wondering general stuff like what areas of the Croix hold sturgeon, what type of structure to look for. I have picked up the stuff about gear in other threads.

Hopefully you’ll have a little dumb luck your first time out like my brother and I had. We were fishing Moore’s tourney and caught quite a few sturgeon, enough to never be bored. There were plenty of boats around us that were quiet. We also got a couple bonus fish like channels and a bullhead. We have not had that kind of luck since.

If you got a good depthfinder, I’d look for schools of shad in 18-30′ of water. I’d also try marking fish. Neither will guarantee you anything. I’ve fished with Steve Demars where we marked a bunch of fish, but caught none. I also have bounced from huge schools of shad to the next with my brother Ron with no success. I have also caught 1 sturgeon in well over 35′ of water…well over.

    But that’s me.

Worms seem to work well up on the Rainy, but I’ve never really fished the St. Croix. I’ve heard shad is the bait of choice, but they have been hard to come by. What other live bait has worked well on the Croix?

I’ve heard sacrificing a virgin helps when fishing with him.

The shad used for sturgeon fishing is very very dead.

I’ve had very good success with “fillet of sucker”. That and virgins.

    Best advice I’ve read yet.

Only 23 days until sturgeon season on the Sconnie side! Woohoo
