Besides the fact that I am experiencing withdrals because I have not caught a sturgeon in over 3 months, I’m very confused about the St. Croix sturgeon opener.

WI regs say that it opens on Sept. 1st
MN regs say that it opens Sept. 4th

    Which is it???

I thought it was odd that MN says it opens on a Sunday so I wanted to see what WI says. Please help!!! BK???

Here I thought this only happens with walleye season.

    I would only be guessing.

No problem, I’ll just head to the MN DNR website to see if there was a rule change or amendment.

    Oh yeah, thats right, Shutdown

What is an addict like me to do now?

I haven’t followed the WI opener in years past, but in MN it’s always (in recent years) started on the first Saturday in Sept.

    The 4th is a Sunday.

This date was for the WI/MN St. Croix sturgeon season. The date for inland sturgeon was the same.

I get the feeling that either they both posted the wrong date or they couldn’t agree on a date.

…and one will blame the other. Well, that’s what happened with the walleye opener.

I’ll see if I can catch up with the MN CO today for clarification.

Found out the MN Tip line is down…then tracked down our local CO and left a message at his (home) office.

I spoke with one of the biologist that’s on “vacation”. He figured they weren’t aware of the conflict.

The wheels are turning. I’ll give him a call back if I haven’t heard anything by tonight.

Thanks BK! Glad we have someone is on top of it

Now what will they do about the entire season? I propose that we fish year round catch and release and no open harvest season until both agencies agree there is a sustainable population.

Straight from CO Alex (forgot last name), the CO for the Washington County area of the St Croix River. CO Alex check with his WI counterpart prior to returning my call.

Note: Any questions about this should be directed to him. PM me and I’ll give you his office line.

For MN and WI LICENSED anglers

Season Starts Sept 1 on the St Croix within the specified boundary’s.

IF YOU PLAN ON HARVESTING OR POSSESSING A LAKE STURGEON Prior to the MN Season (9/4) and are from MN you will need a WI Lake Sturgeon tag and a WI license.

For all of us catch photo and release people, we can fish from Sept 1st through Oct 15th 2011.

    Thanks for bringing this up!

One less thing to worry about now. Thats about as clear as you can get on a very unclear situation. Thanks

Looks like I might take that thursday and friday off. Hope to see you out there.

I’m very curious if it has always been this way???

If so, we’ve all been missing out

I’m pretty sure tha the mn co’s are not too concerned about this as there is absolutely no risk associated with it.

In 09/10 the WI opener was Sept 5th same as MN. I can’t speak for prior years.
