The flow went from 30k to 50k, temps dropped to 67 degrees on P-4.

….and the sun was in my eyes.

We had fish each night, just that none hit the 10+ pound mark.

The fish came from in the runs and from the main river channel.

We were out there…just the wrong place at the wrong time.

Some action is better than no action. I’m experiencing conditions here that are 3 to 4 weeks behind normal. The fish I got this weekend are recent post spawners. Males are still on beds here. I’ve never seen it so late before. Blue gills are still on beds here they usually are going Memorial day weekend. High water and prespawn doldrums are a tough nut to crack.

We fished around south Red wing Saturday. The water was very fast and muddy. Fished various depths and current. We boated some nice channels (2 over 30″)that where taken on cut-bait in faster current. Nada on bullheads (one run and a whif in a slow shallow eddy against a bank). Pulled the plug at midnight. The river….always something to learn.

Sounds like things are tough all over. Let’s all hope we get a reprieve from the rain this week and things calm down a bit heading into the holiday weekend.

Minnesota spilling over its banks. I have enough troubles with normal water levels! It’s kind of hard to set a speed trap with so many escape routes!

    Funny Pug.

I was noticing last night that the flow of water is going around L&D 3 yet from the high water. How will those fish ever use a fish passage way while this is happening. I think they should raise the banks to ensure the passage way money is well spent.

    Ok, rant off…

Normally this time of year I would be thinking of fishing my super secret spot by the dam. I checked it out last week when the rollers were down and there was still too much flow. With the rollers up…I’m thinking the end of August if the dang MN stops dumping it’s flood waters in P-2.

‘spose we should be happy we aren’t on the MO River.

In the words of Homer Simpson, “Its funny because its true”.

In a lot of areas the water was spilling over into backwater and shoreline. It’s hard (for me) to figure where a flathead is most likely to travel when migrating out to feed. Its like playing flathead plinko in the trees. And at our first spot where we have caught a few fish previously, the berm we fished was submerged. So a fish traveling upstream could go on the outside where they were forced with lower water and where we caught some previously. Or they could go inside the berm between it and the bank. OR the fish could now just swim over the berm.

On the previous trips we had a fish within 20 minutes of anchoring.

The whole system is backed up. Has anyone been to the confluence of the MN/Miss recently? Is the Miss backflowing into the MN?

It’s not just the MN…you are correct.

Just lots of water from everywhere.

Ol Herb down South hasn’t taken his high waters off for two years. This year he’s gone to his speedo.

Sorry buddy, but I’m afraid a speedo would take away from my dickydoo. Can’t have that now.
We are heading for our 6th crest on the big river and I think the 8th on the Iowa since the first week of march. I’m going to stop counting soon. Haven’t seen normal pool on the Miss. since 07′.
In a way, I’m kind of glad to see frustration coming from you guys up north, but then again it all has to run by here eventually. I’m used to it by now.
Came home yesterday with 23 fiddlers and 2 large smokers for the boy.
    All is well in ‘mudville’.

Cool, then you can handle the extra water from the new stadium parking lot.

The Croix is backing up now.

Played hooky this afternoon and shore fished with some Sonny’s by my house in Fridley. Caught 13 fiddler channels in just under 2 hours, with lots of missed bites. More interesting were the dozens of carp gorging themselves on cottonwood seeds in the flooded trees. I was really wishing I had a fly rod for a bit there, there were some 10lb + monsters in there.

Oh I bet I know where those cottonwoods are. I remember when I was young wading and chasing them down there.
