Finally had a good night on the St Croix. Picked up 3 flatheads and 1 small 24″ channel cat. The flatheads were: 38X24; 37X24; 30X18.5. That jumped me up the flathead leader board a bit at 176 points. I need a couple of good upgrades to make the 200 Club.
These were hungry fish and they were clean and not marked up – all the fish came on cut bait. I had a cut bait rod out and a bullhead rod. Nothing touched the bullheads all night. All the fish just hammered the cut bait and were hooked on an 8/0 circle hook. I had a tough time getting the rod out of the rod holders with those bigger flats – they just grabbed the bait and took off, doubled the rod right over in the rod holders.
I’ve was out 5 times from 12 June to 19 June and was skunked every time. I stayed off the water for the last 4 days with all the rain and bad weather. Today it was beautiful – water was a bit cool at 64 degrees but the weather was partly cloudy with calm winds. St Croix is about 6 1/2 feet high at 682.1 feet and is supposed to crest tomorrow at 682.7 feet just shy of the No Wake level. Lot of debris floating this evening so I ran pretty slow in the dark – saw quite a few logs floating on my way out but I didn’t have any trouble on the run in after dark.
A couple of pics of the two bigger flats.
