Another monster Mendota cat

For the last few days I’ve had the catfishing itch going. I’ve learned to listen to my inner voice. Post cold front is usually a time to do something else. I found myself without a fishing partner and headed out alone. I found I had the lake to myself which is very rare. It was a little chilly out but no wind. I went to my go to spot and found the weeds are several weeks behind normal and 66 degree water temps and decided not to fish it. Not a recipe for success here at all so I went across the lake and tried a new spot where I found an 11 foot deep flat with emerging weeds up two feet from the bottom. I set my rigs to drift right over the weeds and found immediate action with a 27×17. I was getting bumped pretty regular but the fish weren’t taking it. After missing a few I finally set hook into this big girl 34 inches by 22 inch girth 22 pounds 4 oz on the digital and she fought like a tiger. I listened to the Brewers beat the Cards and ended up with 6 fish all over 20 inches. Sonny’s blood under splash brights and a good time was had by all. Tight lines. Tomorrow I’m heading out to fish Lake Wisconsin with John Schultz. We are going to try to get my twin boys into their first walleyes doing some trolling and jigging.

Nice fish, Kev. You are going to be some competition for the channel cat division of the King of the Cats. That 56 point big one is a beauty. Two more like that and you will be the man to beat.

I hear you Steve. One trip so far this summer since early May and I’m on the board. There seems to be some awefully good talent on the KOTC. I used to think it was unfair to enter these cats against the river fish who work for a living until I saw some of the fish from the Red and other places were pretty stocky. I’m lucky if I get to fish once a week these days. That beast took half the skin off my thumb with her. I couldn’t get it to open its mouth to get the hook out. I’m going to invite Mudshark more often. Each time he bails I hit a good fish.
