I have found that the river (sippi) has had its way with a few of my go to snag spots that provided much of my action last year, With these spots no longer holding fish i have began to wonder, where next?

I have done some research and have known that some guys like to fish holes as compared to snags.

I am interested in stating to fish holes but the last two trips out holes have given up no action so i am a little discouraged.

I have read that most flats will rest the day away in a deep hole not to far from there night feeding locations,

Are most of the fish going to be out of the hole in the nighttime,? is deep hole fishing a better suited daytime tactic.
I have a few areas that are off of the main channel that are the deepest water in there respective stretch of water.

Do i want to focus on the farthest downstream “tail” side of a deep hole or the upstream side where the hole starts, or anywhere in the middle.

this is just my experience, and i haven’t been fishing for flats but a few years. fish the hole during the evening, then as dusk sets on, have your bait positioned on the edge adjacent to shallow feeding areas, that way when they leave their “home”, your bait is the first the see.

then i do like to fish edges of the holes again later at night/early morning, when they come back.

best thing to do though, is have more than just yourself fishing, so you can have multiple baits out, in different locations.

you put four guys in a boat on a border water, and you are able to cover some water pretty effectively.

You can fish resting areas anytime. My best luck going after the deeper holes has been at noon. Those fish if there are any there will eat if an easy meal hits them in the face. Fish the upper end for 10 or 15 minutes move 10 yards, fish 10-15 minutes. Give the whole thing a good working over. Look for barge turn spots that may have a blow out hole or scour hole and also spots where maybe two sloughs come together. Fish will transit out of resting areas both above and below. If you find a resting spot that holds fish, go back to the nearest feeding shelf in 5-7 feet of water and setup there or on the way to there. Another tactic for fishing resting holes is to hit them with a jig and sucker or bullhead. Slow slip with the current and a sturdy jig. I used to use Esox jigs. You’ll lose a few jigs but the strikes can be unbelievable at times.

I’ve never jigged for flatheads but it sounds exciting to be holding your rod with a tight line when one hits.
