Cat Guys- Who’s Dunking Live Bait?

Look like I won’t make it out until the 14th.

Who’s been dunking bullies or suckers? Any luck?

Live suckers should be bringing in big channels about now and a chance at a flat…but then again a large chunk of cut sucker could do the same thing.

No flats in the near future for me yet.

Waiting for some warmer temps on the Minnesota river.

Next week I may go bullhead fishing to get the tank full of bait.

    Won’t be long.

When we were fishing a creek to fill the bait tank last weekend, some guys came down and caught a few bullies to take out for flats that night, so someone’s trying already.

    Someone’s gotta be first, right?

Water&Ice, we use live bullies for flatheads. Most will say they work better the live suckers. Creek Chubs work well too.

That’s about all that’s allowed in MN.

When we talk channel cats we talk cut baits/stink baits “generally”.

I use to start when the water temps were under 50 and did not have much for luck. Seems when that water hits 55, the game begins.

I guess I will not be the first for the flats.

Live suckers here. But nothing yet. I’ve had some hardcore close calls, but nothing hooked up. Incidentally they’ve all had rattles on them. I tell ya, them rattles is the thing.

That reminds me…I bought the rest of the crap I need to build my bait tank. I need to get that puppy finished and get the suckers I have in the garage into it.

I’m going to get my boat ready on Thursday of next week; Thursday evening will be devoted to fishing for chubs; and I’m making a long weekend of camping Fri-Sun or Mon. I don’t even want to think about it until then.

    Sorry, I can’t stop myself….In the Mouth!!

Do you have any local ponds near you with easy bank fishing?

PS I’m working with a new bait shop in St Paul to provide bullies for sale. Hopefully he’ll be up and running with in a month.

I have access to a pond full of bullheads. What size do people use?

Hi – I see you live in SD, so you may want to check size restrictions/legality there as I am unsure. Here in MN you can use up to 10″. Anything below 7″ is considered a minnow and does not count toward possesion limits. There is a lot of debate if bigger bullies catch bigger fish, but I think anything above about 5.5″ will do you well for flatheads.

In regard to your question about hooking bullheads, again there is some debate on this, but if you dig around on IDO a bit I think you’ll find that most people tail hook them right behind the rear fin (on top). Just try not to break their spine when doing this.

Yeah, there’s some debate, because some of us will go thru the meat above the backbone just behind the dorsal fin in certain conditions and lip-hook them in other conditions… I prefer to lip-hook mine if there’s much current at all.

It takes a bit to work the hook thru their bony upper lip, but for both suckers and bullheads, if you have them in moderate to heavy current hooked through the back they don’t last as long and if if you use rattles and have them lip-hooked facing into the current will keep your rattles working anyway.

    I caught my 40+#er on a lip-hooked bullhead and my 16#er on a lip-hooked sucker last summer.
