Sturgeon gear advice – Rainy River

    Hi everyone!
I’ve got a trip planned to Sportsman’s at Rainy River and am looking to put together a new rod/reel combo to handle some, hopefully, huge sturgeon.

Research has told me that a Shimano Cardiff 400 has the capacity, line rating and gear ratio that I want… but I’m wondering if I need a larger conventional reel instead of the round baitcaster.

Ideally I like the Cardiff for it’s versatility, but I also don’t want to risk blowing it up on a Sturgeon and handlining it in.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome!

The Cardiff is very similar to the Garcia 6500’s and I’ve been using them for 5 years now with one 60 pounder under the belt.

You should be good to go…

Stop in at the Wigwam Friday or Saturday evening and introduce yourself. I’m thinking I’ll be the (only) guy in pink.
