I know many of us make our own sinkers for cats/sturgeon but I thought there might be a few out there that would like to save a couple bucks by getting a group order together.

Check out the prices at http://www.cheapsinkers.com for your favorite sinkers and sizes. Depending on the quantity we’ll find the least expensive way to ship.

This is not an order, just a poll to see if there’s interest in putting an order together.

I really want to start making my own, but I can never find the no-roll sinker mold when I have the $ for it. I just might investigate making my own molds and see how that works. I’m actually pretty handy at things like that, so we’ll see.

Has anyone else used anything but the little electric smelter for melting the lead?

    Smelters??
Those small electric smelters are to small imho, I use a water heater burner running off propane and a cast iron pot that prob holds a gallon of lead, once mold gets hot you need to keep it that way, the smaller electrics may not do that.

    NICE, dtro! I like it.

And I also like the piles of weights you ended up with… that’s my goal for sure.

I don’t want to inhale lead fumes so I work outside on a Coleman camp stove with a metal pot that holds about 2 quarts. I never fill the pot more than 1/4 full or it would get too heavy to manage safely.

prices are still a little spendy…

i can get 10lbs(40 sinkers) of 4oz no-rolls for 25 dollars shipped on ebay.

these guys want $28.00 plus another $10.95 for shipping. 15 dollar difference.

    Oh cool, thanks… so I would want the 3-4-5 and the 6-8 versions… I usually carry 3 & 4 oz and 6 & 8 oz no-rolls.

So that’s $60, plus shipping, plus lead, plus gear (melter of some sort, pot, ladle, etc.) it seems like we’re talking $100-$150, but I may spend $20 on weights every year.

It’s seeming less cost effective the more I think about it… anyone have an opinion on that?

If all you spend a year is $20.00 on sinkers then I personally just buy them.

    Cheaper and safer

Back when lead was .34ish a pound I factored in everything except labor and travel to pick up the lead. Break even was just over 200 4ozers if I recall.

Look for a post next week on details for ordering your sinkers. Once I have the exact quantities and location info, I’ll get back with each person on the shipping costs.
