When does everyone start going after the flatheads? Last year I didn’t start until mid May. I think I blew it and should have started say the last week in April. Any opinions would be great. If you have a water temp you look for it is appreciated.

I’ve been told 50F is when you go. And I think that’s when you go to dams to look for them. (notice the qualifier there) After the water goes up a bit then they disperse and look for spawning habitat. I’m not sure where the break is, so enlighten me. I’m also under the impression that the big fish and small fish will approach the dam at different times. Big first and then the little ones later as the water gets a bit warmer, possibly. It probably depends if the hole under the dam is a wintering hole for them too. Don’t hesitate to fill me in on what I’m missing. josh.

I usually stay away from the dam too many people and boats to deal with my 14 ft jon. I have a few high water spots that current causes the fish to congregate under bait fish on deep current breaks. Especially, on the downstream ends of islands. 50 degrees sounds about right to me. Thanks for the info. I started as I said in mid May and caught fish my first nights trying.

Down where I am in Iowa, the first time we went out last year was in april sometime. We ran into a guy that said he’d been “catching them for a month already.” The water was over 50 by that time I think.
