    Very handsome fish!

I noticed your hood up…was there a wind down there? I didn’t know ringworms came in bright red? Is that the hot bait this time of year?

That sure is the prettiest lookin flat I have ever seen. Come on, get your eyes checked, that is a CHANNEL. They are two completely different looking fish….. Very good looking fish, I will add.

Maybe you did catch one of them snaugers and this fish just ate it on the way up.

    Can you tell, I’m jealous!

Sorry for the mis-identification. I am just a poor walleye / sauger guy who does not have a lot of cat experience. This fish had such a rounded tail , not the forked style I have seen in the past. I guess I need to go to cat school.
Anyhow , it was a decent battle.

Sorry, I was so hard on you, its just I normally am replying to Briank or Bowfin. And I guess I am jealous as it has been such a long time since I got to feel that wonderfully smooth skin those kitty’s have.

As long as we are identifing cats…

I picked this baby up while fishing for bait (in case the Red River folk are watching) on the croix. I think it’s a channel and I know it’s not a flat. Not a great picture, but I’ve heard of blues up here once in a while…is it possable?

Looks like a channel to me, It would be tough to tell the diference between a blue and a channel from that angle, but I know there are very few blues this far north. There are a few, but I have never seen one. But then again I have never seen one in person, period. Only in pictures.
You did pick it up didn’t you?

It’s my understanding there is no official reporting of any Blue Cat ever caught hook and line in Minnesota. If you ever get one, turn it in and you will hold the state record!

Thanks Jon…Even though the chances are it was a channel and the RR boys think it’s a channel.(C/A would squirm if it was a Blue )..it just became the state record Blue that I released… in my book.

Thanks for letting me steal part of your title Jake!

I don’t know that what you said about the blues is completely true. I have heard that they are making a big comeback in Minnesota waters. My friends down around Mankato say that they have heard of them being caught in the Minnesota and LeSeur rivers as recently as last summer.

You can call the DNR to confirm. Let us know what you find out.

The Blue cat that was reportedly caught last year on the Minnesota was actually caught in another state. The guy brought it here to claim a false state record and was caught lying!

If you look at the Minnesota State records for 2004, there is no listing for Blue Cat. A one pounder will crown you the record holder if you bring one in! The 2003 Blue Cat of 52-8 was tossed out.

hold on just one minute der MR. BRAINK!!!

your claim is TOTALLY BOGUS!!! ………blue cat or not, that itty bitty thing surely isn’t any type of state recored………in fact, i caught one 10x that size last summer………..wouldn’t that make me the ” Unofficial, Self Proclaimed MN State Blue Catfish Record Holder”???…….i think it would

    and better yet…….I HAVE PROOF!!!

Some fisherman misidentify a channel in its spawning colors as a blue. Channels during the spawn will sometimes turn a dark blue or even black color. Some fisherman who catch these fish, after catching the lighter colored channels during the spring, will think these fish are not the same fish they had caught before. With their dark colors they will just assume they are a blue catfish. I am not saying that it can’t happen, but it is highly unlikely that a blue will be this far north. A good freind of mine who guides for blues in TN says there are very few blues in the Mississippi north of St. Louis.

The fish below is a channel in its spawning colors.

If you ever catch a catfish and think it is a blue here’s about the only way you will able to distinguish the difference. A channel cat has a rounded anal fin with 24-29 rays. A blue has a long, straight-edged anal fin (tapered like a barber’s comb) with 30-35 anal rays. If you catch a smaller catfish and it has spots on it that is a channel because a blue will never have spots.
