OK, so its only 96 lbs. Close enough! With all the talk in a previous posts about what a true 100 lb cat really looks like, Dave “ecnook” Koonce, from Prairie du Chien, WI decided to send out this picture he took of a friend standing next to this enormous catfish so we all could get a sense of the incredible mass of a nearly 100 lb fish!

WOW! I’ve seen some big cats, I’ve even caught some big cats…. apparently 50 lbs isn’t all that big and compared to this beast….. mere guppies!

Thanks for sharing this photo with us Dave. If anyone else has a photo or two they’d like to share with all of us here at FTR, send your pics out as a .jpg attachment to an e-mail to: [email protected] We’ll get them posted up here as quickly as we can.

One must ask the obvious question….was the fish caught on hook/line or dragged in with that net laying on the ground? Either way, it does give you a good idea of what a 100 pound cat looks like.

Oh it was no doubt from the net behind him. His name (the human) is Jack Renner from the Lakeview Resort north of PdC. If you are in the area it is a must to stop in and listen to his story. Tell him you seen his pic on FTR. The fish is in Lansing Ia. being mounted for the wall at the resort.

Where was the cat caught? WI had a new flathead record registered this year with a fish less than 80lbs.! I mean, if that’s from boundary waters………..WI resident………..he SHOULD have the current WI state record, shouldn’t he?

only 3 lbs short I believe. It was caught (netted) near Bagley Wi . I’m sure he checked all that stuff out . I listened to his stories for a while and he did mention being short of this record and that record. What a fish though.

Only short 3lbs. I think that fish could easily eat something 5 pounds for a snack. That is one large catfish. It would take a serious fish fry and a lot of a Leinies to wash it all down with to get rid of that creature. Great Photo Thanks

2001 WI regulations records the state record flathead cat at 65lbs. 0 ozs. Caught in the Fox River, Winnebago Co., 4/19/87. This spring, a new record was reported out of the Mississippi at like………..78lbs………….it was less than 80. I thought it was a post here that got my attention to it. Did anyone else see a report of a catch different than that?

I think there may have been a few changes made to that picture? The cat is a big cat but things may not be all they apear to be. Look at the details in the photo closely. The prospective is off as is the coloration. I think it has been altered?

I thought the same thing when I saw it but the mount will be in the Resort when the taxidermist gets done with it. ec

Yes………………a close look at the pic does raise some questions……………..but I’m still bent on what record he was 3lbs. short of if the fish did indeed weigh 96lbs.

Okay……………….WI record flathead came from the Mississippi on March 30, 2001 and it weighed 74lbs, 5.1 ozs. and was 53″ long. You HAVE to tell me what record he was 3lbs. short of……………….it’s killing me! :O)

I’ll dig into this pic a little more. I only scanned it from the pic he had. But when you talk about bogus pics I see no shadows now that I look closer. I know the group out of Lakeview does alot of nettin around the area so a trusting person that I am I did believe. Now I’m second guessing the pic. Let me dig into this and get back to you guys.ec

I agree that the picture does look a little funny. It almost looks like it was superimposed. But if he is getting a mount then I would like to take a look at it. Something is a little werid about it though.

Allright, how has this thread gone on so long without a picture of tourist guy from the world trade center standing next to that fish? Makes me wish I was more of a photoshop wiz.

One thing I don’t quite understand – was it said that this fish was netted? I didn’t know that was legal.

Supposedly caught while making a seine hall in the lower part of pool 10 . When I saw the picture the first time it weight 88 lbs.,how things grow?? Also I was told it’s a blue cat not a flat head. That would be one big blue for this far north?? I wonder when the last minnow truck from down south came through?? Just some more gas for the fire!!!! I believe its a Wells catfish commonly found and caught in Europe. Could be wrong… but I’m fairly certain.

Looks like the world’s largest tadpole crossed with a willowcat!

James you are correct! That is a wells….. catfish … native in european waters…. they actually use a fish call over there a method called ….. I believe klonking…. or something like that …. they make a niose in the water that attracts them…

I wonder if walleye have a call that works, hopefully it sounds like a jig snagged on the bottom of the river I would slay them for sure with a call like that.

Here kitty, kity, kitty! Of course, that would work to gather the “bait” a guy could use to fish for those things! I understand they grow to several hundred pounds regularly and occassionally MUCH larger.

geeee if we HAD to have a european introduction.. why couldnt it have been them instead of carp? maybe if introduced they would eat big carp for snacks just like our cats eat shad?
