I was wondering how most people use cut bait. Once I catch a bluegill what is the best way to cut them up? And what is the best part of the cut up bluegill to use? Also what is the best way to rig the bait?

In Wisconsin, yes it is perfectly legal to use sunfish dead or alive for bait. Live is better IMO

basshundter, I’m going to assume that you are fishing for channel cats as cut bait is “generally” used for them. I can’t use gills as I’m from MN…but when I use suckers, I prefer the heads. Just make sure that they are stepped on to get the juices flowing so to speak.

If you’re planning on fishing flathead cats…then use the gill alive. MOST of the time flats like live bait…although when the flow slows flats will take dead bait more often.

    Good Luck!

PS for hooks on channels, I like the Gamakatzu 2/0 or 3/0’s and anytype of sinker. I prefer no rolls, but channels generally aren’t too fussy.

    Flatheads, I like the 10/0 Gamakatzu’s.

The head, and the mid-section will work the best(area surrounding guts). Flats will take a fresh cut sunfish too.

The size of the bait depends on the average size fish in the area. If they are big(10+), they dont really care and will inhale it… smaller cats are a bit more fussy, and tend to beat the bait up before eating it. If you scale the gill bfore cutting it, and cut the fins off, you will have a higher hook up percentage.
