A friend of mine gave me a Penn Delmar 285 and I’m wondering if it would be good to use for catfish. It’s not a levelwind, but seems to be pretty darn sturdy. I’ve done some searching on the web, and haven’t come up with any useful information.
It looks to me like it was made for saltwater fishing. Anyone out there ever use one? My second question is; is there anything I need to know about using this thing as opposed to a levelwind? I’m thinking there could be some problems with the line getting fouled up somehow, maybe?

I know nothing about that model of reel. Is it one of the monster size reels? If it is, they are not very fun to cast unless your 7′ tall(huge spool and high clearance).

The levelwind.. they are not on all reels. I am certain the non-levelwind models are traditionaly used for long range surf fishing becuase they have less line restriction when casting out(line doesnt scrape levelwind). I guess if you can make 190 yard cast and catch a big fish, there shouldnt be too much of a issue pitching a live bait a short distance if you can get used to the massive spool, and 4# reel(if its a monster).

    Thanks, Dave.
The reel is 3″ in diameter, not very heavy. I’ve used musky reels that weighed almost as much. I’ll bring it to Moore’s one of these days and you can see what you think.
Yeah, the resistance with a levelwind can be an issue.
I’ll take it out and try it anyway. Just wondered if anyone else had used one. I’ll post on the results after I try it a few times.
