Where can I find the proper hooks for catfishing with bullheads? What size and type of hook should I use? Thanks to you guys I found a nice bullhead pond over by Goodhue and I’m going to try catfishing for the first time Saturday night. I’ll be sure to post my results.

    Thanks

Gator Hunter – I have gotten some of my hooks from Catfish Connection. Try this URL – http://www.catfishconnection.com They have most of the hard to find items. I personally use large hooks in the 7/0 to 12/0 size. I like Circle hooks because you usually get a nice hook up in the side of the mouth and it helps to release the fish in good condition. They take some getting use to because you don’t set the hook like you normally do but instead just let the fish almost hook himself and then start to reel for the hook up. Use large hooks and don’t worry about exposed hooks on your bait. All the cats see is food and they don’t pay any attention to the hook. This is not really finesse type fishing, hang a big hunk of cut bait or a good sized bullhead on a big hook with a fairly large sinker and plunk it next to a big old brushpile. Expect to get hung up in all the wood you are fishing in. I keep a heavy pair of work gloves with heavy leather palms in the boat to handle the heavy duty line when I get hung up. You can mess up your hands trying to pull loose from cover.

Thanks for the advice. I went down to four seasons this morning and they didn’t have the right hooks for me but the kid working there(I didn’t catch his name) is a catfisherman. He sold me some of his personal hooks and also gave me some great tips about where to fish on the river. I’d like to throw out a thank you to him for his help. Thanks to you also comanchero15. I’ll have to check that web site out. I think I’m all ready to go Saturday but if any of you have any other advice I’d sure appreciate it.

    Thanks

While I think that Comanchero has covered the basics, there is one important thing that he forgot:

Gianni’s right. I forgot the brews. Also a large bag of salted in the shell peanuts and a radio to listen to the ball game. Gotta listen to a Twins game while you fish – life is great, isn’t it!!

    Gator Hunter,

Go to Everts resort and tell steve that you are lookin for some big cattin hooks…… Tell him Mavzer sent you and you want some big Mustad hooks out of the “catbox” he will hook you up! Mustad makes the best dam catfish hooks avialable… I don’t know why biate shops on the missisippi don’t carry them, maybe they can;t order them, who knows. But I see you live in Bay City,,,,drive down 35 a couple miles to everts and get you some good hooks….

Thanks mavzer. I appreciate it. As for the brews, I definately will remember that part. By the way, are you the same Mike Maves that made the paper for the argument in the Ellsworth baseball game? We’ll have to hook up and get out there some night and I can learn from an expert.

Before people get the wrong idea
I slid into second base to break up a double play…. the baseball was booted by the shortsop, I did not know that he didn’t have the ball and i took him out with a hard slide (to prevent the double play) I did not intend to hurt is feelings as he shoved me after the play .. punches were thrown and emotions got the best of both of us… the benches creared and that was the end of it… both teams were drinking beers after the game… it was an imprtant game for both teams and it happens once in a while.. I am usually an so don’t get the wrong impression.

Alright! Full contact baseball! It’s about time someone added some spice to a game even a girl can play!

(got a feeling the bench is about to clear again!)

Gator Hunter – If you are still looking for large cat hooks I was at the Sportsman’s Warehouse in Coon Rapids and found a pretty good selection of large hooks. I bought a pack of 50 Mustad 7/0 hooks (92553) for $6.59. They had a selection of Gamakatsu Octopus hooks up to 10/0. I didn’t see any large circle hooks. The address is: Sportsman’s Warehouse, 12661 Riverdale Blvd, Coon Rapids, MN 55448. Telephone number is 763-560-2000. It is located in the Riverdale Shopping Center, you can see it as you are heading north on Highway 10.
