Yesterday I finally caught enough bullheads to go fishing. (at least by myself )With the great forecast I headed out this afternoon for some flatheads. No wind, a few clouds…weather was perfect. After trying a couple old spots I decided to change it up a bit and work some new areas. It paid off with a couple flatheads, 5 and 11 pounds, plus a nice 8lb channel cat. The flatheads had alot of silt on their bellies. They were caught on bullheads very tight to wood and manmade cover from 12 to 17 FOW in medium current. I found that if I did not fish as close as possible to the cover I didnt even get bit. It sure was nice to see the flathead “pop” of the rod tip again. Time to get more bait.

I’m not going to sleep tonight!
May 9, 2007 at 2:22 am #569328Nice update Mate!
They started back up on the MN this last weekend. Check out the fishing reports if you haven’t had a chance.May 9, 2007 at 4:06 am #569399Yeah Brian I wont be sleeping tonight either. When that rod tip went BANG! (no clicker either) , I almost forgot what to do. After that first fish it all came back to me though…
Larry, I need to check the MN river forum more often. Dang nice channel cat Bob caught! Good to see those flatheads too.
After today I need to add sunblock to my tackle box. Man I got fried!

Its funny how the daylight does that to us night fisherman. I got a little toasted up north a couple weeks ago.
May 9, 2007 at 11:18 am #569432With the 80 degree days now…don’t forget the bug repellant.
The best I’ve found is the stuff that 3M makes in a small tube. Don’t need much, don’t stink and since it’s in a tube…doesn’t screw up the plastic in the boat like the sprays can.
The other piece that really helps is the ThermaCELL. These really do help that deadly 45 minutes at dusk.
May 9, 2007 at 12:40 pm #569472They were hitting crankbaits last week while trolling. I would say they are FULLY awake
May 9, 2007 at 1:11 pm #569497Hey Tim –
Daytime flats – that’s cool!! I’ve never got a sunburn flathead fishing – I may have to try that. Sounds like the prespawn bite is on. I was out last night but skunked – the only nice thing was Morneau’s home run in the 10th inning.May 9, 2007 at 1:22 pm #569506Its great to hear you had some luck Tim!
My fishing time has been very limited(none) in the last few days. All the reports I keep getting suggest they are awake for the year. I know Manny had a couple mid day runs the other day in a short fishing trip, last night he caught a 20, and mr keb got a small one.
Fast and furious… No… But a slow and steady bite is hopefully a sign of very good things to come soon! The calendar is consistant with the 2005 season on when fish really turned on the feed bag.. which happened to be the best season ever for the metro folks.
The water elevation and temperatures are ideal.. I am excited to get out as soon as the homelife allows.
Fingers crossed… it might be a good year, cant be any worse than last!

Uh.. the flathead FISHERMEN are waking up then.
May 17, 2007 at 1:07 am #571988Sounds good! The water temps down here are really up already, so I’m gonna get out for some flatheads real soon myself. My buddies already have a 22 and a 20, so I gotta go out and get one now!

Better hurry Mate,
Some close to 40lbs have been pulled out of the waters up in MN and the water temps have not hit the 70s yet.
I can’t wait so see a fishing report from your neck of the woods.
Get ER done!!
